1HZ Turbo thread

Here are some pics of the finished product, note that the compressor outlet doesnt go straight up and into the intake - just because of the bugger turbo size - in comparison to the GT28 it is quite a bit bigger.

The silicon elbows and such are quick installs as I just wanted to get it on the road and dyno'd before the intercooler goes on. Time was not on my side for this install - hence the quick adapter plate I had to make up - next one will be hydrocut and CAD'd for future installs.

Looks pretty slick Louis,
Is that just a stock exhaust manifold, that the turbo is bolted through an adaptor, or is that some other manifold.
Cheers,
Deny

.. rev faster than a diesel, ..

It is this abillity that makes them so good in the long and high dunes when you don't have a long runup but for the rest it depends mostly on the driver and gear selection IMHO

That looks cool Louis. That turbo is much bigger than my TD04 !

Ya it is pretty big, noticeably bigger than a GT28 disco potato and lots bigger than a GT25. This guy has a couple of t3's and 4's he wants to dump quickly if you know of anyone who wants them - cheap.

I am surprised no one else is using this turbo setup over seas - although the turbo shop owner told me that precision just came out with this model a few months ago.

Nice clean install.
But with only 8psi boost, the benefit from an intercooler is going to be very small, it might not be worth the hassle.

I will add the intercooler and boost it more. No that isn't the turbo - the innner parts are but the hot and cold sides are different.

Can you get some specs on it (or off it)? I'd like to map it out and see how it compares.

How much boost can you get with the wastegate hose blocked and at what rpm?

*edit*
After another look and some hunting through the precision website. It appears to be a T3 based turbo. That makes it a whole lot smaller than a garrett GT32 and takes away a lot of the mystery.

That would make sense. The turbo shop guy said it was a very efficient turbo and will last a very long time. It has a journal bearing but because of my application it will see very little wear.

I can get as much boost as I want (I stopped it at a 15lb surge - no idea how high it would go if I kept it floored), so 15 pounds, i forget what rpm but not too high maybe 2-2100? I'll confirm that again later.

Wayne, I see where some guys on the outerlimits board are using 30 pounds of boost wiht their 1hz's, alot of them are runnign 15-18 pounds intercooled and with no pump mods.

i topped mine out at 14psi...but i think with enough fuel and 30 lbs of boost the 1HZ would be a bloody hoot to drive...

Journal bearing turbos often last as long as the engine they're fitted to. I have one with about 200,000km on it which has even run without oil on several occasions. Still kicking strongly.

That T3 core also gives you the biggest range of upgrades and spares. If you ever need a rebuild it won't cost much.

The damn manual boost controller isn't working properly, boost slips up to 15 if I tramp on it - back to the turboshop:(

Have a dyno appointment tomorrow - have to get it fixed before that.

Results are coming!

Ok, here is the dyno result from today, video will be uploaded in a while.

HP is 123 HP up from 92 pre turbo 33.7 percent increase

Torque is 222 foot pounds - up from 161 foot pounds. 37.9 percent increase.

The dyno guy figures that with all the loss from the engine to the wheels (transfer, tranny, diff, etc.) that the original dyno result of 92 at the wheels was probably about 130 at the flywheel, so if that hold true I should be up around the 160HP mark at the flywheel.

As you will see by the guages in the video - I didn't boost the crap out of it - or turn the fuel up very high - just moderate increase. However, a 33 percent increase in a landcruiser is about the equivalent of slapping a beaumark missle on your ass - this truck moves pretty darn quick now.

Now I will install the intercooler, up the boost and fuel and see what I can get out of it.

Hi Wayne, I plan on it - sooner than later, been busier than hell these days. Intercooler, then new deck and then not sure what else - what can I do next?

don't ask...it is a slippery slope you are on my friend...

i will be in Ontario as of the end of November, you should bring the rig by and let me take a gander...
