One good point for all the DI toyota's, but specifically the 1HDT - the wrecking yards here, when the get a head in stock they can't sell them (they hate them for that reason) because they seldomn crack. A 1HZ might crack if you look at it the wrong way ;-)


Yes but if you could collect those heads its really not that involved to convert a 1HZ into a 1HD. I have a few heads around now so I will do this as I can collect enough parts.
 
Engine in place now. Fuel lines and battery cable are routed on the firewall around the back of the engine. A shot of the new high pressure PS line

found a good spot to locate the vacuum canister. Engine bay filling out and mostly done in the second two shots. HDJ80 air cleaner top makes it much easier to connect the turbo inlet. An HJ61 Starter relay and glow plug relay are mounted below the brake booster. There are bolt holes where the carb fan used to be that match the pattern of the glow relay perfectly.

exhaust routing. my least favorite thing on one of these...
3" aluminized mandrel bent tubing was used. Note the tube between the tcase and frame has been flattened slightly to add a little more clearance. The steel fuel lines had to be cut out and rubber lines routed to the tank. The pipe is hard mounted to the tcase to keep it in place through that section up to the turbo dump. The whole thing is then routed up and over the driveshaft.

more exhaust shots. There is one joint and the stock hanger in front of the muffler is re-used. S curve around the shock then out near the stock location. The whole thing will come out in two pieces if you remove the trans crossmember.

Alright thats about all the photos ill put up. Sorry for the compressed thread. I thought the pictorial would be worth more than words and I didnt have time to post much along the way.
I had the 60 for 6 weeks working on it at night and on weekends. Had a few long days chasing air in the fuel but otherwise it went quite well. BTW air in the fuel ended up being the front seal on the newly rebuilt injection pump. Not sure of the cause but it popped out early on. When the engine sat overnight the line from the filter to the pump would drain into the timing case (and the oil pan ultimately).

Very true, and indeed I have a dead 1HZ at home with this in mind, but then you need an injector pump to DI spec and all the injector lines....this is where it starts to get expensive and I start looking for a factory 1HDT to build....

You can use factory 1HDT rods and stronger pistons (aka 1HZ-T) but hardly worth the effort when you consider that a 1HDT is all round better anyway.

So many dont do such a neat install, it looks like you have carefully considered each component!

Are you running the exhaust over to the driver's side in order to use stock exhaust hardware or to get it away from the fuel, brake, lines, etc?

Are you using the stock Power Steering Cooler in the radiator? Which Radiator are you using?

You might think that running the exhaust on the right side all the way would be easier. It really isnt. You have rear heater lines, fuel lines all the way back along the frame, an axle breather line and the shock to get around. Issues both ways but to me it makes sense for it to be on the left side. BJ60 does a similar route except it routes outside the frame on the right- then over the frame on the right to exit as I have it.

No LC that I know of has a power steering cooler in the radiator though some do use the auto trans cooler for PS cooling. 60 series just has a loop of steel line that provides some amount of cooling. The radiator is a champion aluminum unit. The fan shroud was fabricated from two FJ60 units. Ill post some photos.

Yeah, figured there is no way to run the exhaust on the pass side due to all the various plumbing that runs down the inside of the frame rail.

You got me on the power steering cooler issue, thats what I meant. I believe I remember KevinRowland or VTCruiser's build up threads, and one of them went with a aftermarket power steering cooler because they had to lose the stock tubing in order to fit the radiator they went with.

What muffler did you use lynchmob? I am building the exact exhaust right now and am having a hard time finding a small muffler.
