Hi I have a 94 80 series it has started to make a strange rattle after it has warmed up and when idling it goes away when I rev past 1500rpm, I have seen a couple of post online with the same problem only no one has an answer.
HELP!!

We need more info like where in the engine the noise is coming from. Low and to the drivers rear, front pass side, deep in oil pan, high in valve cover???????

Some rattles come from the exhaust heat shields on the cats.

The rattle is coming from the front of engine around the timing chain cover, it doesn't do it when it cold, I thought maybe timing chain by why doesn't it rattle when cold or high revs?

What brand and viscosity oil are you using? How many miles on the engine? How long has it been doing this? Has the engine had any major repairs, headgasket?? Can you get a video clip of the noise and post it up on y0u_tube?

I use penrite HPR gas20-50, 270000km the motor hasn't had any major work that I no, I've only had it a year, it started a month ago when I was 4wding. I did an oil change the day before

If the rattle started immediately after changing your oil then it seems logical to look at the oil level, oil pressure, oil filter. Do you have oil pressure, where is the needle at idle (what rpms) and at 1500 rpms (hot versus cold engine), how much oil did you add, how much oil is showing on the dipstick (engine warm, checked a couple of minutes after shutting down)?? Where are you located? Checking/changing the oil filter might be a first step.

Thanks kernal, I've have checked oil level, it is spot on full, I always use a good brand of filter and have change it again since this rattle started. The oil pressure is at 2/3rds when cold at idle and just above low when hot at idle, it goes up to 2/3rds at 2000rpm hot, I've been told that's pretty normal on the 80s. Does any one no if the timing chain tensioner be removed for inspection by undoing the to nuts that fasten it or is it attacted to slipper?

Could just be the AC or Alt. idler pulley bearing. Worst case is timing chain guide is worn

I have pulled all the belts off and it is still there so I have ruled that out, Its almost sounds like diesel! Does any one no why a petrol cruiser could sound like a diesel??

Loose valve adjustment or bad exhaust gasket at the manifold or y pipe. Could also be something with the distributor cap or wires. Cap could be cracked or bad wires or plugs.

Thanks for the reply stevesnj, could worn tappets really sound a diesel? I thought tappets is more of a tick tick sound rather than a rattle, I will check the shim clearances tomorrow, worth a try! Also why would distributer cause that that sort of sound? I hope that's all it is, I was thinking timing chain which was worry!! Big job just to get timing cover off. Any other ideas would be appreciated

So you have a knocking at idle (like a diesel) that goes away with higher RPM's? Wonder if bad connecting rod bearings could be the cause the knocking?? Can you get a video/sound clip and post it up somewhere?

I would put money on rod bearings or wrist pin bearings. The way I see it you have 3 options. Drive it rebuild it or replace it. Personally I would drive it until I felt it was unsafe

I will upload a video as soon as I get a chance, it doesn't sound like a bearing, i have done bearings on my GTR and my old 4runner, this time its a engine rattle rather a knock knock, and it doesnt increase in speed with revs or get louder, I think I'll just thrash it till it dies and address it then! Cheers for the replies

Do you have oil pressure?
Edit: sorry I guess I forgot how to read for a second there

It could be pinging due to carbon build up in the engine. Sort of sounds like it.

Try running higher octane fuel as a cheap test to start.

Have you done a base-line of the rig? Full tune-up?

No reason to hate Toyota's, remember you do have 16 year old rig, they need some love over time.
