Yeah I done a full tune up 2 months ago. Shouldn't need another yet surely, pinging usually happen under load, my rattle is between idle (800rpm-1500rpm in neutral, I haven't heard it while driving. You are right in saying its 16 yo rig, it's just giving me the s*** as I fix 1 thing and another pops up!

Sound like what I got. my engin done 360,000 km it has worn timeing belt guides. When the plastic come off or wares out on the guides the timeing chine slaps on the side of the case But to see if it is only way is take the rocker cover off and look down you soon see if it is I doing my timeing chain this week. hope fullley with out taking the head off.

I realize this thread is dead but ran across it while looking around. I have the same issue. Timing chain rattle at idle with engine warmed up. Goes away when increasing RPM slightly. I also started with taking all the belts off then listened with a stethoscope. Then took the valve cover off, everything looked ok except I could see where the tensioner had recently extended out about 2mm. I pulled the timing cover off a couple days ago found the chain is right at its stretch limit and guides are cracking. I'm at 330k miles by the way. Oil pressure reads just below 1/3 mark at idle warm.
I was able to pull the timing cover with the head still on. Once the pan is off it slides out easily but I would recommend using silicone where the top of the cover meets the head on reassembly.
I used the timing chain kit form LC Engineering. But I would not use the tensioner. It does not have gear on it to keep it from collapsing like the OE.

My truck makes a rattling noise on the hwy mostly, when cruising with my foot barely on the gas, slight decel.

Could the EGR make that rattling sound? This is the only time it does it, and this is also when the EGR "should" be opening.. I think..

My plan was to actually remove my EGR, as my truck is an OBDI. Hoping this will fix the problem. Less is more!

A slight metalic sounding rattle while cruising and under medium load could be pinging caused by combination of EGR not opening and carbon build up on pistons. If it is ping disabling the EGR will only make it worse.

It is not pinging. It is a rattle. the egr doesn't open under any condition other than cruising, and it doesn't ping under load or high heat.

K well if it's not ping then The EGR valve is not causing any rattling. The only way it would is if the pintle bore was badly worn and if it was that worn you would have a very large vacuum leak through the bore.
EGR is actually open a lot more than just cruising. It is open to some degree at all times except idle and heavy loads. If you don't believe me get a decent scan tool and and OBDII car and watch EGR duty cycle while driving. Or T into vacuum line with a gauge and watch operation.

I was just saying that I know it is not pinging. I was throwing out the idea of the EGR making the noise, because I have NO IDEA what else could be making it.

Does the PAIR valve operate any time other than startup?

It should only be working when cold but if the solenoid is stuck open it could definitely be causing a rattle under those conditions. I would just delete it. I removed mine and relocated my oxygen sensors up into the ports in the down pipes to plug the holes. The harness connectors reach without any modification.

Sane situation, ever solve the problem?

Mine is a 94 and made similar noises went away when I removed the EGR system and Pair system

First thing to check is your toolbox for any missing sockets. Rattles typical come from a 10mm socket left in engine bay. :flipoff2:

I did the hudexpo "test" kit to stop the EGR function, made no change.

Really strange noise as it doesn't change with RPM and it's only when the rig is warmed up
