anyone interested in breaking down what i am looking at in this image that was kindly supplied by another ih8mud member? the black one is a version that was "inverted" because i was having a hard time seeing the original for some reason. somehow i think it is easier to use.

anyway, is anyone willing to also answer a couple of really dumb questions?

such as - i know it is an inline 6 cylinder. and i see the middle four cylinders and the intake and exhaust valves "inline" on each of these. but what is happening on the ends? are those each cylinders and the intake and exhaust are located transversally somehow?

oil pickup of some kind is at the bottom in the sump?

what else am i looking at?

alternator with a rotor and stator is on the front there somewhere?

another dumb one...what does the fan do exactly?

THANKS

Cylinders 1 and 6 are at top dead center.
This is only the block with intake plenum and main exhaust collectors. Oil filter is on the right side in the bottom two pics.
The fan blows on the radiator, which is not pictured. Neither is the water pump

Anybody else see a Dia de las muertas-esque skeleton/cat image in the frontal view of the engine? I can't unsee it.

This brings back memories. Man, I miss that opossum.

thanks a lot gents. hopefully i am not jumping in too early here. so i guess i see the six pistons. are they taking liberties with the “section drawing” and actually cutting through the piston in the front (i guess that is #1?)? i mean, it looks different than the others. i guess they are actually cutting through it?

also, can i post this view that someone mentioned? what is 1 - 6? and i am looking from the front of the engine in this view i guess...?

THANKS

nice. i was cleaning the underside of that last image today. sort of interested in knowing how things are organized in that one from front to back so i know what i had my hands on...

also, the other image is showing a massive crankshaft with big “lobes” bolted to the engine block and then the bottom of the conrods, is that right...

Yes they are not showing a perfect slice they are showing different sections of parts to highlight different things. Like the pistons some show the skirts some show the compression height. You are looking at the front of the engine in this pic.

1. PCV Hose
2. Intake runner
3. Exhaust outlet to exhaust manifold
4. Intake Cam
5. Intake Manifold
6. Crankshaft counterweight

My picture showed #6 closest to you. The timing chain is in the back of the photo and is closest to #1

The two photos you reference above have the entire assembly. Engine, transmission, transfer case. The lobes are the crank shaft in the bottom of the engine.

/thanks/. two cams (intake and exhaust) on this thing?

thank you.

i’m sure i butched this but...

engine | transmission | transfer case ?

Yep you got it.
excellent. thanks.

i think i just scored some help from a fellow LC owner down the street. left him a note yesterday.

so covered parking, an extra pair of eyeballs and i nailed that drawing. great week so far.

that must be some interesting transmission. guess i better google “transfer case” and get cracking on what that thing does...

Cylinders #1 and #6 show the spark plugs and spark plug tubes instead of the valvetrain. This is why they look different from the middle 4. JUst a choice made by whoever drew the picture.

Spark plugs are in the center of the combustion chamber, valves are offset to the front and back (or side, depending on how you want to look at it) Technically, if you cut the motor in half right down the middle, all you would see would be the spark plug tubes, not the valves.

nice. thanks.
so the fan is connected to - the crankshaft? or it is somehow turned by a different motor or some kind of step down or something? and it cools the radiator i guess (duh).
there are two camshafts?
and two (one?) timing chain? timing chains are at the back of the engine is that right?
also, i’ve heard different terms - but there is a front main seal at the crankshaft? and a rear main seal at the back of the engine as well? or how many seals in this engine exactly?
THANKS
