Hi Everyone,
This is my first post on the forum here, I've been a fly on the wall for the past few years. I'm building a 1FZ-FE engine for my '97 LX450 and thought this would be a fun one to document. I'm doing this in my free time, so I'll be assembling little bits over the next few months.

08/19/2024. Unboxed new OEM shortblock assembly, Part number 11400-66041. Thoroughly cleaned with compressed air to ensure no debris left in orifices/threads/crank case. Mounted to engine stand. Coated cylinder walls with engine oil. Masked off unpainted surfaces for touchup paint.

08/22/2024. Scuffed existing paint with scotchbrite and alcohol, blew with compressed air, wiped with alcohol, and blown again. Applied VHT flat black engine enamel in two thin coats, followed by one wet coat. Removed masking tape. Installed new timing cover pins (x2 90253-11021), cylinder head pins (x2 90253-15007), and upper oil pan pins (x2 90253-13002).

09/02/2024. Removed engine from stand to install rear main. Installed rear main seal retainer pins (x2 90250-06028). Thoroughly cleaned engine surface and rear main seal retainer with several rounds of isopropyl alcohol. Packed a small amount of grease into lip of rear main seal. Applied a very thin layer of grease to crankshaft seal surface. Applied a 3mm (1/8”) bead of Toyota 103 FIPG to rear main seal retainer, carefully installed, and torqued bolts to 15 ft-lb per FSM.

We all have our preferences when we use FIPG. I always prep with a scotchbrite pad with alcohol, then wipe with a towel/alcohol, followed by alcohol blown off with compressed air. Probably overboard, but it makes me feel good. I like to ere on the high side of the FSM recommended bead size, but no larger. Any larger "squeezes" additional FIPG out that will probably fall in my oil pan one day. I was pleased with how this retainer turned out, I had a small amount of excess FIPG "squeezed" out all the way around the retainer.

Installed bell housing to transmission pins (x2 90250-08054). Reinstalled engine on stand.

Installed oil cooler/cover per FSM (cooler to cover nuts torqued to 12 ft-lb, cover to block 15 ft-lb). Relief shuttle (1513164020), relief spring (1513250010), all crush washers (x3 1513420010) were replaced with new OEM parts on the cover.

Installed new engine oil orifice (11448-66010) with a small amount of Loctite 242. No, the FSM does not recommend Loctite here. Yes, it did make me feel better for some reason.

Installed new OEM oil filter union (90404-19015) torqued to 33 ft-lb per FSM.

More pictures from 09/02/2024.

FOR NEW SHORTBLOCK BUYERS. The engine does not come with the two studs for the oil cooler (x2 9212260825), nor the two for the power steering pump/timing cover (x2 9090126001), nor the two for the water pump (x2 9212260860). Everyone talks about the pins (dowels) you have to buy, but don't forget to grab those studs as well if you aren't re-using your old ones.

Wow looks sweet !

Subed.

Thanks! It's been a long time coming, I ordered my shortblock almost a year ago. I'm working on the timing components, hoping to get that posted soon. If anyone wants part numbers that I don't list, just let me know. I've got them all somewhat easy to access.

I probably won't mention gaskets since they are mostly from the OEM overhaul gasket kit, 04111-66036.

Welcome aboard. Check under the timing cover (and elsewhere) for excess casting material, which happened to @COYS on his all-new-parts build; he found out when it broke free after installation. Btw--your garage is way too clean. Gotta fix that...

P.S. -- Good reference--and don't let the title fool you; that's not a refresh:

I'll check for sure! There are definitely plenty of reasons to look at a "new" block with extra scrutiny. Mine had lots of fibers stuck to the crankshaft that were a PITA to clean out. I wish that were my garage! It is an aircraft hangar, and I am fortunate enough that they don't mind a little personal space at work.

09/03/2024. Just a few small pieces today. Installed engine mounts (blasted/painted) with new OEM hardware and new isolators. Bracket to block bolts torqued to 51 ft-lb per FSM. Bracket to block bolts are (x8 91512-61230). Rubber mounts/"Isolators" are (x2 12361-17011). Metal piece above isolator is (x2 12381-66010).

FYI, anytime there's a green dot on a fastener, it means I torqued it to spec. I use a paint pen and i
t keeps me from forgetting a fastener!

Installed new OEM Oil Pressure Sender (83520-60040) with Loctite 242 on 2-3 threads per FSM (no torque spec here, just use a wrench and go by feel. Tight enough to seal, not tight enough to strip the threads). We always joke about fasteners in aluminum--"tighten it until you here to pop and then back off a quarter turn" ;)

Installed two new OEM knock sensors (x2 89615-30050) torqued to 33 ft-lb per FSM. These were much cheaper from Partsouq than the US dealers.

I remember when I did this 8 years ago…it’s actually quite fun.

Great, so when can we look forward to the Beaver build?

Keep laying out the part numbers by the in-place parts; that's extremely useful but seldom done. When you get to the hoses, here's a thread that might help; it doesn't have them all, just the ones I could reach at the time...

Following closely, I ordered my short block today.
Thank you for listing part numbers too!
Awesome man! You might get yours much quicker than mine. Mine took 11 months to receive, but the dealer said if I ordered another one it would show up in a week. Bad timing on my part I suppose. No problem, let me know if you need any other PNs, I've ordered pretty much everything for my build.

If you have a comprehensive parts list or spreadsheet etc, post it up. @COYS did both, but he had ordered some stuff ahead of the Big Spend that's not on the list...
