well im new to ih8mud but im already impressed.

heres to my question i am about to buy a 1973 fj40 its got the old inline 6.
i think its a 1f it may be in need of a rebuild. so ive been checkin around im having alot of trouble finding a rebuild kit. if anyone knows where i can find one any help would be great.

First, might be better to post this in the 40 series tech section...these 70 guys probably never heard of 1F.
2) Let your machinist find the rebuild kit
III) Welcome. :flipoff2:

No one in their right mind would rebuild a 1F anyway....

The parts are out there, and yes it's often wiser to let your machinist find the parts for you.

SOR has kits fwiw

Like mentioned, a good machine shop should be able to source parts but its not going to be cheap. Might want to think about upgrading to a 2F or do a 350 swap. Unless you are doing a restore and what to keep it original.

Actually, my machinist got the rebuild parts for less than I could find them...

Same here and i'm actually in the parts business myself. I did have to get pistons from SOR though. At the time they were the only place I could find .040 over dome pistons for my 2F.

My machinist beats your machinist...mine found Federal-Mogul pistons for my 50 boreover.

My machinist definitely found 1F flat top pistons for my FJ40 rebuild. We'll see what he finds for the FJ45 next week. Machinists get the best deals.

If it's the '73 Transition engine, or F.5, I'd rebuild it. My machine shop had no trouble finding .40 over domed pistons, I provided the gasket kit (SOR). This was the first Toyota l6 they had done, but it wasn't any problem. On the buildup I just had them install the cam and crank/pistons, the rest I did.
If it's the old style F I think I'd look for a 2F. My .02.

im new to toyotas how do i tell if its the f.5 or the 1f. im trying to keep the truck a toyota at heart so i dont really want to do the 350 swap and was hoping to be able to rebuild the original motor. how well does this motor perform once tuned up. am i wasting my money on the f motor. ive had a samurai and dont really want to go back to a weak motor but i dont think i need the power of the ol 350.
thanks alot

The oil filter is mounted on the right side in front of the distributor on the F.5. It is mounted on a plate attached to the intake manifold on the F. Here's a picture of the F.5. The freeze plugs are also different.

I think the F.5 was only available in '73 and '74 but plenty of parts are available. Mine makes an honest 50 psi oil pressure and is smooth as silk.

i would imagine that it would be less of a hassle to just put in a 2f
theyre easy to find parts for, they bolt right up [kind of] and best of all, its toyota:grinpimp:!

good luck
