Does anyone have a service manual for a 1996 Lexus LS400 that has the pin out and resistance values for the heater motor resistor assembly. Failed VA state inspection because the fan only goes at one speed. All signs point towards this part. I would either like to rebuild it or cut off my big toe to buy one for $300+

Travis.

I know, I need to buy the manuals. I just want it to pass inspection so I can start baselining it.

LS400's are fairly common in junk yards, at least they were in the ones in charlotte when I used to go there a lot. People buy them for cheap and rag them out. Could get the part for pretty cheap that way.

All but the steering wheels!

uh what? failed inspection because the ac fan blower only works on one setting? talk about draconian

The technician said that the fan had to work for the front defrost. I looked at the guy and said that's what the front defrost button is for. He did not agree. Funny, I picked it up later that evening and when I pressed the front defrost button, all the fog on the windshield went away. Now the car is registered in the entire Commonwealth on their electronic tracking system. No matter where I go, they will look at the defrost for the front window before they pass it.

im sorry, i know its stupid.... BUT IT STILL BLEW ON HIGH???? So you failed for defrosting too quickly???

Andrew, it only blows on low. I took the dash apart, applied voltage, it ran on high. There is the automatic controller in the dash, a blower motor resistor, and the blower motor. If there is no blower then I look to the relay or fuses. If it only runs on high then I look to the controller. If it only runs on low apparently it is the resistor. New-$320 Grahambrothers in Alabama has not returned my three emails as of today. Guess things in Alabama take longer.......

ClubLexus. Outdated system that is not user friendly. Comet041 is my handle there.

i know, im sorry, m not being helpful... im just still in awe that it was an issue, not working i get, but it worked. Sorry for jacking the thread :-(

There are more conversations about rims than anything else. Its like the cupholder dilemma of the land cruiser world.

Edit: on ClubLexus.

In my non-Lexus general automotive experience, the blower’s default is to blow at full speed. The resistor eats up voltage to slow it down for the lower settings. That voltage manifests itself as heat in the resistor and eventually kills it. If you do have low speed, you might want to look for problems other than the resistor first.

That’s all I got...and it ain’t much. Just enough to throw you off course. Sorry, man!

I will go back to the basics tomorrow morning. Fuses and relays. Gotta find where everything is in this electronic wonderland. The main defrost 30 and 50 amp fuses are green under the looking glass, that can't be healthy.

In my old Chevy work van ,the resistor went out twice ,each time it only blew on low.

Well that’s good to know. I had a Chebby that when the resistor went out twice I lost all fan power both times. On my Toyota’s, they have all been wide open with no low. Apparently each resistor has a mind of its own.
