I bought my 1994 in December and I'm continuing to do some baselining. I bought an OEM air filter to put in the truck (17801-66030), and I plan on cleaning the MAF sensors while I'm at it.

When I looked at the old air filter, I found K&N Decals on the housing and the part next to it (not sure what it's called). Is the "stop" sign sticker on top of the housing something that PO slapped on there when they put in the K&N filter? Or is an entirely new housing? I can't imagine it's a new housing but I'm a little confused and I want to make sure the OEM air filter I have on the way will fit. Thanks!

A word to the wise when it comes to the 93 to 94 VAF meter (what your calling a MAF sensor) used on these trucks, if it isn't BROKEN, don't mess with it, The VAF meters for these trucks are no longer available, and if you mess yours up by cleaning it, as of 9-2024 it cost $365 bucks to send it out to have it repaired,

The "stop" sticker is from K&N and can be ignored. When they first came out a re-useable air filter was not that common and they gave the sticker to let people know not to throw it out. The other box should be your cruise control and I have no idea why a sticker would be on that other than someone wanted to get their extra 10 horsepower wherever they could. .

Just a sticker that came in the box that a PO slapped on the stock can. The housing looks original, except the nut on top should be a fancy rubber cushioned wing nut for easy removal by hand. They are still available from the dealer and are reasonably inexpensive. The factory paper filters are washable, pretty cool if you ask me. I have two so I rotate one out while I'm washing/drying the other.

Hahahaha. Lord knows they need it.

Thanks for the response!

Gotcha. I will be leaving that alone then. Thanks for the input!

Leave the VAF alone, drop in a new air filter and call it good.

On the bottom of the metal housing there's a "tuna can" that can be cleaned out as well if you like.
Leaving the VAF alone has been echoed by others here. I won't be messing with it.

Thanks for the info!

The only problem I can think of is if the previous owner ditched the two gaskets, 17841 below, that fit into the OEM filter. Take a look and see if they're still there.

While we're on this topic and FWIW, this evening I picked up two Toyota Denso air filters from my local dealer each with it's own part number, 17801-66030 and 17801-61030 (I ordered one of each). The 17801-61030 has the factory cleaning instruction sticker that indicates that filter is washable, the other filter does not have the sticker. I've used both filter part numbers in the past but never compared them (new) side-by-side.

Comparing the plastic top and bottom caps the filters have a different texture between them, smoother plastic on the -66030, rougher on the -61030. IDK the significance of that, if any. For anyone who's into trivia (and has sharp eyes), the -66030 has a green inspector's mark and the -61030 has a blue pencil mark.

So took some photos and the filter media appears to be similar for both.

17801-61030 showing the cleaning instruction sticker (17801-66030 does not have a sticker). Note the rougher surface of the plastic cap where the rubber seal sits when the filter is installed. So was this a planned design change and if so why, better sealing or ?? (the washable filters with the sticker I've used in the past had a smoother surface, FWIW).

Interesting comparison. They appear to have the same construction, at least from the photos. Was there any price difference between the parts? I wonder if the one not labeled washable is indeed washable? Super interesting find.

FWIW, I have 4 air filters of various part numbers from my 1991 FJ80 through my 1997 LX450.

They're all identical as far as physical size, all are washable and reusable (or at least that's the way I've treated them for the last 30 years). The 68020 has a darker colored element rather than the bright yellow of the others, so I suppose that the material was changed over the years resulting in a part number change.

Personally, I'd go with the one that has the cleaning instructions on it simply because it's cool.
And no, I haven't been using the same filters for 30 years. I do occasionally buy new ones.

Good information.

Some US sources list both the 17801-66030 (yellow media-no sticker) and 17801-61030 (yellow media-with cleaning instructions) at the same price ($28 MSRP).

Years ago I also used Toyota air filters with the off-white/light tan filter media, likely 17801-68020 or 17801-68030 as listed above.

One guess is the bright yellow filter media has a different composition (synthetic fibers, different coating??) compared to the off-white/light tan media??

There are of course counterfeit copies (from Chy nuh), one has the same cleaning instruction sticker as the Toyota part so buyer beware if ordering from fleabay or Amazon.
