Well, to sum it all up, the solenoids were indeed the problem. I have not had one single incident where the transmission seemed (or actually was) starting out in second or third gear from a stop.

Thanks to everyone who provided their input

Way to go!!!!!!:bounce::bounce2::bounce::bounce2::clap:

A noob bringing up this old thread as my brothers '93 LC is having the same types of problems.

His first started after doing some water crossings. His transmission would not start out in first gear after selecting the 'D' position. His O/D light would blink sometimes and the vehicle would run fine if you started out with the gear selector in the 'L' position and then worked your way manually through the gears back to 'D'

I started looking through the list of possiblities on the thread and found a fair amount of corrosion on one of the plugs above the engine's starter, a round housing 9 pin connector using 8 pins, that I tried cleaning up by chipping away some of the rust/corrosion with a small screw driver, compressed air, and some wd40 but it appears a few of the pins are about to fail and look like they barely make contact.

Does anyone have a source for pins to redo this connector or a whole new connector and pin set?

I've called and searched online only able to find used pieces and no help from a dealer-only say they can sell a complete wiring harness:confused:

Still thinking this is part of the problem before checking the shifting solenoids in the transmission. I have a Haynes repair manual and have no luck in finding how to do a tranmission electrical check like I can do with the engine electrical mangement system interface.

Anyone explain how to diagnosis the blinking overdrive light?

Thanks for any help for this noob LC wannbe mechanic.

First off, welcome to Mud! :flipoff2:

The pins and plastic connectors are indeed available individually from the dealer, but you need to find the right dealer (PM cruiserdan or gotmud on here, as the both sell Toyota parts at great discount to us Mud folk. They are also very knowledgeable about LCs)

You will need to know the 5 digit code printed somewhere on the plastic connectors, as this identifies the plug. Then, if there are any different sized pins, make note of how many of each you need. If you can tell one of the aforementioned parts sources that you need X big pin splices and Y small pin splices for connector 12345, they should be able to help you out.

Hopefully someone with an A442F can help you out with the codes.

Thanks man!

First thing I did when I registered was send out a PM to Cdan, still waiting for reply but will get the numbers off the connector and have them ready.
Will check with GotMud too.

Hoping this is just related to the electrical connector and not the solenoids, wanted to fix this first and go from there.

Look forward to being able to test the transmission's fault codes...

that sounds like you're on the right track. definetly take care of the connetors first. make sure you dis-connect the battery while you do the electrical work. this will ensure no chance of any shorts and should clear some of the short-term codes from the computer.
you can do a paperclip diagnostic test but a scanner will reveal more. it'll also be able to give you code definitions and clear the codes permanently.

May as well follow up from my last post since this thread is up at the top and mention that there have been zero problems with the transmission since installing the new solenoids.

Throttlemeister: I also checked the connectors since the previous owner really buried the undercarriage in mud just prior to selling it to me. That is a good place to start, and hopefully will be the end to the problems your brother is experiencing.

Old helpful thread TTT once more:D

This project got pushed to the back burner working on other projects and screwing around. Now back on the ball. I couldn't figure how to post pictures in a pm so I'm posting them in this thread for help.

Still messing with the round style 9 pin connector that has a couple of pins rusted off that I'm almost sure is causing his problem. A member here said to look for a 5 digit code on the plug but this one only had 3 space code "B14" from what it looked like. Here are the pictures I have from his spare junkyard engine/transmission.

The plug I'm having trouble with goes down to this on the side of the transmission:

another angle:

There is a short wire loom and this plug that comes from the side of the transmission in the above pictures. Even his junkyard stuff had the same corrosion problems:bang:
Here are the male pins in the female plug body that I need to find:

Only 8 of 9 pin spaces are used and the junker has already 2 rusted off. It had no numbers on this plug. The 3 space code "B14" was found on the opposite connector here:

There are two other larger body plugs in the same area right above the starter and I pulled them apart and they look great, I'm not sure why this 9 pin plug is not sealed as good as the others.

What I really need is the male pins for the plug or the whole piece with wiring loom that is bolted to the side of the transmission. This is an awesome vehicle he's got and it doesn't deserve to sit like this. Thanks for any help.

PM sent

That will be a bare connector, no repair splices. He needs splices.

gotmud you need to learn how to run with the big dogs................

He did some checking and said the pins are not available for this one anymore. Do you have any 8 pin conectors that I could splice in. I've found these water resistant connectors at waytek wire here:
Molex MX 150L Sealed Connectors - Waytek, Inc.  - Waytek Wire

Sucks when stuff is discontinued.

Thanks for any help on these one Cdan

Dan, you only saw half the story.

If I ran with the big dogs, I'd have to charge as much as them. :D

John,

Per our PM's, the plugs you showed me or the ones I found for you will work just fine. The splices Dan mentioned above will not since they are designed for the plugs you currently have, not the ones you are replacing them with.

***Back to running my gift shop***

Why not retain the current connectors?

Fixed it to be historically correct.

I knew what you meant.

Agreed, no-go on the connectors.

Interestingly enough the latest version of the wiring repair manual also excludes the splice numbers even though they still exist.
