Dan, you only saw half the story.

If I ran with the big dogs, I'd have to charge as much as them. :D

Just wanted to thank the Big Dog for giving me the answer on the ID of the radiator hose, big help!! Thanks Mud!!

I'm having the same trouble as GotMud.

I'm pretty sure you are on the right track. Does you "N" position light on the instrument cluster not illuminate?

When I was swapping my motor, that connector was a pain to un-plug. When I got my motor back in and was having transmission trouble, I instantly looked to see what that connector was for... transmission shift position. After a little pushing of the wires on either side of the connector, everything returned to normal. "N" properly illuminated and all.

Recently the behavior returned... man my fat arms don't fit in that area well.

Other interesting notes on behavior for other who may come across this:
As long as I start in "L", I'm fine. After I start moving and shift into "2" or "D" the transmission behaves normally. The same even goes for reverse if I reverse fast enough.

This is exactly what my brother's LC is doing and I'm hoping its related just to the connectors and not the solenoids. I'll fix them first and then see what happens.

Another thing I've noticed is the O/D light will go to blinking.

Can't wait to get this thing fixed and out of the way.

I have seen cases where a leaky PHH in a 93-94 drips coolant on the neutral safety switch connector and it rots the terminals.

Still having trouble:frown: I replace the damaged wires in the plug going to the transmission and still have the same trouble with the shifting. The transmission doesn't want to start out in 1st gear, only when you shift it manually to low will it go to first.

Guess its time to change or check the solenoids(s) Any ideas for any further testing of hints to changing these?

Determined to get this thing fixed!

I have a hard time believing it is the solenoids.

Why would "D" slip, when it should be in 1st gear and "L" not slip?

Why would 1st be fine every time but startup ("D" works fine from a start once I get moving once in "L")

I never did follow up with this story as I took off on a wild assed motorcycle adventure down to South America www.throttlemeister.net and never got around to posting up until I got some time down here in Cartagena, Colombia waiting on a busted shock to get fixed.

I ended up getting some pricey new solenoids from Dan along with a very nice techincal book shipped out to me. I put in the new solenoids and with some new AT oil and the problem was fixed. After pulling apart those two electrical connectors and seeing the corrosion I'm still amazed the thing worked at all, it could only be a matter of time before they crapped out.

The LC did great after that but during this last big winter strom that nailed Oklahoma earlier this year my dad was driving the thing and rolled it 1 1/2 times ended up on his side. The LC was a little banged up for wear but a passing big JD four wheel drive tractor used his front end loader and popped it over from its side back to four wheels and my dad was able to drive it home with some busted up glass and dented doors.

Insurance totalled the poor thing and my brother bought it back and it sits in the shop once more waiting for the next step. Last I heard the transmission is still working good:clap:

Its always something and it never quits!

Just reviving an old post here, very familiar with the shift solenoid issue on these, my 95 had that problem at 250k, bought a new tranny to throw in A343 if memory serves correct(was 2 years ago) but I've yet to throw it in (wheeling only truck and have just been manually shifting it until I throw the new trans in...

Just got my 93 back on the road (motor rebuild due to thrown rod due to PO running low on oil) anyhoo, my trans has been slipping slightly, and doing the periodic 2nd start issue...at least that's what it seems to be...

In my haste to get it on the road I forgot to check/add trans fluid..

It's halfway up the cold notches when warm...could this cause the symptoms I'm describing?

The reason I ask is I only have a limited amount of time to work on it(just had a baby) so Saturday is my only day and don't really have time to troubleshoot...

If the solenoids end up the issue, are they the same as the A343 that I have for my other cruiser?

Thanks for the thread.
On my 93 FJ80, I replaced S1 (failed part read 0 ohms), purchased from Dan and I now have first gear! :)

So I just bought my Son this 94 FZJ because they run for every right. Unless your son has been driving a new model and put it drive...or at least thought it was in drive based on the floor shift. That was in March. Just got it back yesterday after having a new motor put in. I don't even want to say how much it ran after all the extra parts that need to be put in as well. Anyway I am now experiencing the shifting issue. I believe it probably is the solenoid. Is there a likely culprit of the four. Based on this thread sometimes the solenoid will test fine. I thought maybe there was one that goes most frequently. I am having the same issues with sometime working on cold start then only working manually with L/2 etc. I attached below a pic of the Hanes manual page showing the locations of the solenoids.
