seller wants $37K
Whoa.
That is a lot more than I expected. The cosmetics being this nice is a huge plus, but with those miles I would’ve thought low 20’s max. 19k feels like the ballpark to me.

Ayup. Here's one with 90K that sold for 5K less:

in the used car world, its worth what someone will pay

Have you driven it?
Does it run and drive well now? any smoke? hesitation in the trans? does it feel strong with tight shifts? at idle, is it quiet? is it full of clean oil and coolant and trans fluid? and drips of those? is the trans/underside clean (from the oil pan and rear main seal work)?, are the front knuckles clean? temp and oil pressure gauge work? when in Drive at a stop, any noises or vibrations?

any warranty left on any of that previous work done?

are you wanting to buy a turn key DD or ok with a project?

Lots of variables!
I get something is only worth what someone is whiling to pay for it.

I have not driven it, I've only received pictures and a cold start video. I'm trying to find a weekend to go look at it at it's 9.5 hrs away and flights are about 400ish.

I can only based off pictures and 1 video as of now. Once I can see it in person I'll be able to get a better idea of everything. Like I said in the first post this would be my first LC and just wanted some insight on the LC world on what goes bad at certain times (usually).

My main goal is to find a no rust fj62 that I drive for a couple of years without having to do anything major as I literlly just finished restoring a 82 CJ7 Jamboree back to orignal and would like a little break from rebuilding everything. This will allow me to save up the money I need to do the LS swap which is the ultimate goal. I'm not opposed to paying for a legit vehicle but based on the info that I have received from the seller I'm also not trying to reimburse a seller for all the little things like paying a shop to replace a blown fuse or adjust a speaker mount.

Oh yea I understand, but since they are asking 'top dollar' then you would want a top dollar rig

if the seller is willing, you'd want a walk around vid at operating temp, pics of the underside and front knuckles, vid of exhaust pipe to check for steam/oil smoke, and a driving vid showing RPMs and trans shifts with spirited acceleration

maybe a vid of the radiator cap off while running to see if its aggresively bubbling/head gasket leak

Thye are very tough trucks, but having shops doing major work and then having to re-do it is slightly concerning

I was in this exact position about a year ago when I bought my first FJ60 - starry eyed thinking that I had to do some basic maintenance to keep my newly purchased 60 running and I'd enjoy it for years to come.

That is not the reality with these rigs. They are a true labor of love no matter how rust free or maintained they are and as sure as you're born they are going to give you problems and become inevitable money pits. I've just finished doing an LS swap and replaced a good amount of mechanical parts on my truck, it has been a super rewarding experience that I've enjoyed thoroughly that I wouldn't trade for the world - but I'd be lying to you if I told you I expected this a year ago when I bought my truck.

Point is these things are super expensive to own and repair already, and the asking price of $37k for a truck with over 300k miles on it is crazy. Even after doing the LS swap on this truck you're going to be well into the $50k ballpark and you wouldn't have addressed the suspension, brakes, steering, etc.

I'd hold out and look for something that's way more reasonable, or offer her $20k before you book your flight and see what happens. Even then I think that's too much for this rig...

What @yotadude520 said…

My FJ62 had 161,000 miles, essentially rust free but needed major baselining and I bought it for almost 1/4 of this asking price.

Then my transmission took a dump.
I’d sell you mine for $37,000, I’ll even include a long list of things still needing to be done.

When you buy a LandCruiser, you buy a hobby. You had better like tinkering and getting dirty or REALLY like spending money.

There's a reason Land Cruisers are called mistresses....

It’s funny, my wife nailed it when I got my 40. She said, “I was going to say girlfriend, but mistress seems more appropriate” when all my nights were spent in the barn loving on my truck.

Update:

So I made an offer of $25K which I agree with all of you that even that was a little high for this vehicle and I might have upset the seller a little base on the reply I got. However I did find out that they supposedly paid $29K for her 10 months ago and have sank another $10K (including lift and tires) into her based on the recepits that he sent me. Also he said that I would need to come up to $35K, so my hunt continues.

I truely do understand that this is going to be a long term relationship but that's half the fun and in my experiance thats all older vehicles. Like I've said before I'm not scared get my hands dirty, here is a little before/after of my last project.

For now I will contiue to hunt for another deal. Thanks again for everyone input!

Good decision. Agree w the others posting here. This is a hobby that requires a constant stream of attention, work and money. It’s one thing to buy in at a price that’s reasonable, but I really feel bad for the folks that overpay at the start and then learn the hard way. Sounds like this seller might fall into that category.

Another one will show up. It is a nice looking 62 tho and I'd be dammed if I would swap it or want to in that price range I'd want to drive it around for a long long time.

Take a look on Bring a trailer:

As you can see, there is a wide range of prices depending on condition of the truck.
What he said ... BAT is great for research, but also a great place to buy.

This 60 has about 18 hours left and will likely go for less than $37K. It has less than 100k and is in beautiful shape.

Take your time. You’ll find the right rig for you, and when you do, you’ll know…
