Parts slowly coming in…

I did some searching and found individual parts for the clutch disc and pressure plate and ordered them.

All good huh? Yeah not so much.

Cruiser outfit didn’t have the clutch in stock, neither does valley hybrids. I wasn’t having good luck finding it. I found the part numbers and ordered them.

Transmission mount from cruiser outfitters
Pressure plate from rock auto
Clutch disk from phoenix friction

Everything checks out until I got the clutch disk. I ordered dtx-149, I got dtx-169.
Called the place and they put me on hold and said that’s the newest version of that clutch.

See these are reasons I almost only buy from vendors here. I don’t have to worry if that chocolate chip cookie they send me is actually raisins…

So on the surface it’s very similar. :rimshot:

Dtx-149 - 275mm OD, 175mm ID, 21spline
Drs-169 - 275mm OD, 175mm ID, 21 spline

149 fits the HZJs 130hp, 210tq
169 fits the FJCruiser/Prado 4.0L 285hp 270tq

But Toyodiy or anywhere else doesn’t show crossover. So my guess is that it doesn’t work, and now I’m pushed back further trying to find another disk. Plus trying to get this sent back/returned to this other company.

Always something.

I don't know when you tried to order the clutch kit but we've had a few massive AISIN shipments of parts arrive from Japan. Most backordered clutch kits have now shipped, I think there is one for the 300mm 1HD kit still waiting on a pressure plate.

Some of you may have seen this in chat, but for those of you that don’t venture there…

I hate thieves!!!

So Thursday night/Friday morning we got hit by some low life’s. Went through our horse trailer, enclosed trailer (only furniture so jokes on you) vehicles and shop.

They took some good stuff and some really cheap stuff.
Brand new 20v Dewalt 1/2” impact wrench/battery/case  $400!
870 express youth 20 guage shotgun
4 pellet/bb guns
Harbor freight angle grinder 15yrs old
Circular saw 20yrs old (blade was worth more!)
Just the pump to the mighty-vac kit (wtf)
A ball joint in a box (looks like ammo box???)

And to p1ss me off, my new harbor freight tranny jack I’ve had out of box for all of 1 day. It’s only $129…but come on.

And i just found out today…the piece de resistance…my BJ74 clutch kit. Those MFers stole my clutch kit I just got from @cruiseroutfit like a week ago on may 25th!

What in the wide world of rundown trailer house meth lab even makes you think to take a clutch kit?!! WTAF!

They also left some Milwaukee tools that didn’t have the battery intact. Plus a dewalt compact mitre saw, a few thousand in mountain bikes and 3 vehicles with keys on them. 3 bows and arrows, a big copper roll of tubing, $1000 festool setup…

So I spent the weekend installing security cameras all over, locks and security motion lights.

Everything has “only” added up to around $1500ish and my homeowners deductible is $1400 so it’s not even worth the claim on insurance.

So yeah pretty upset about the whole ordeal. Ran in at lunch 30mins to get the replacement jack and got home and decided to get the clutch kit ready to install tonight and noticed it’s gone. What an insult to injury….

So enough whining, I’ll get my clutch ordered again and just start later this week.

Here’s my artistic photo of the post from the back of our property….

That sucks!....... On your problems finding a correct clutch disc, if you aren't in a hurry you can get your old disc relined with friction material. It's cheaper. There are multiple companies that relign clutch disc and brake components.

I bet the 169 clutch disc would work, it probably has stiffer springs and possibly a different friction material for the higher output engines, though the 149 might be set up for the sharper torque rise of a diesel engine vs gas.

Hi Kurt, I called a few weeks ago and then today. Said they checked in the back and still no clutch kit for the 13bt or a disc that will work. They are Probabaly tired of me calling in 😂

Yeah I can find aftermarket and upgrades ones, but it’s a bit of a wait and they are quite a bit more. Hoping this disk will work.

Well that’s one of my thoughts. I’m guessing the size/shape is the same just going by measurements. That’s some of the info I don’t know.

I’m pretty sure the clutch springs colors are different, green for the 149, yellow for the 169.
I’m sure it has to do with like you said, power/Torque curve and possibly material.

I doubt aisin lets those specs out for anyone to look up. The bummer would be if the material is different and wears much quicker on a diesel, or slips because of the torque difference.

I guess I probably shouldn't recommend using a gas engine clutch on a diesel, even if it is rated for more torque. This is what I did to a performance 5VZ-FE clutch with my little TDI:

Yep that’s my worry…the gasser clutch will fall apart. Guess it’s time to try the customer service out on this place …

I’ll keep searching for a clutch disk…I really need to fix that seal so looks like I might be pulling it twice.

Pictures make everything better right!

Do you have an existing back-order or just calling to check avail? Full disclosure, we often get shipments in and compenents get allotted to existing orders rather than building out of stock kits. Ideal world they'd get us enough to fulfill backorders, build stock kits and have loose spares, but parts from Japan are still not flush in the pipeline the last few years.

I don’t have an order placed. I tried to about 2 weeks ago but held off.

I do see on your sight you show the clutch disk for the 13bt in stock, I was going to call on it tomorrow. I don’t know if that’s correct or not?

Got the call in, still no dice on the clutch disk, but it could come in anytime. Call back

:D

Still fighting with the other company…it’s not that hard, I ordered dtx-149 according to your website, you sent 169. Should be a pretty simple return/exchange.

I may be redneck boiling the clutch disc to get contaminates out of it if there is enough material left…there should be.

No luck at the moment. No new parts.
I didn’t call cruiser outfitters today so they are happy about that.

Going to start tearing into it in the next few days.

Also getting some new plates. Thinking about personalized plates but deciding what to put on there. BJ74 is out for a multitude of reasons… :D along With anything BJ related.

Here's the thing on the late vs. early discs... they are pretty much the same dimension wise, splines are the same, OD is the same.

Early can have two options (based no VIN/model code), our CL60120 or CL60121, the late (8/87+) uses the CL60282. All three are a 275X175 Lining and 21x29.8 splines. They do have different appearance, springs, etc. We don't necessarily get into mixing/matching as we've had such great success just matching the OE application based on VIN/model code. Hope that adds some clarity.

Gdaym8 for the win

I’m sure Mr T had a reason for the clutch changes. That I knew something was different as the clutch they sent had yellow springs instead of green. Everything dimensionally is the same but springs and internal makeup could be a big difference.

Makes sense business wise to go with what fits.

I’m sure a 1HZ would work good, it’s just finding one.

Possibly of interest? I have a disc for the 4 cylinder 1GD/1KD LC Prado Diesel in my “parts for possible mods/improvement pile”. Thoughts are it could be appropriate for use with some of the 4 cylinder B Diesels in the older LC, which produce 4 cylinder diesel pulses and vibrations just like the new engines. Torque rating is 310 ft/lbs. I have the PP too, but it has a different flywheel step.

That just might work. I’ve been doing all sorts of useless homework on cross checking part numbers and the like.

I do have the correct pressure plate for the 13bt.

This is I think my last go around with a stock clutch in the cruiser. If my input seal gives up again, I’m on the hunt for another B series h55f input shaft to cure this issue, or spray weld mine and then upgrade to a Exedy safari tuff or xclutch. I just don’t want to upgrade to a much more expensive clutch and have another seal fail and ruin it if that makes sense.

And unlike @theglobb i don’t enjoy pulling my engine every other day :D JK.

I’m for sure interested in that clutch disk.
