There's a lot here to unpack. Let's expand.

If you want a 17x8 wheel with the same backspace as an OEM 16x6 wheel, you will need to find one with a -25mm offset.

Correct, it's hard finding any Toyota fitting rim, 17" with the right backspacing, let alone a rim that I would even consider putting on that doesn't look like it belongs on some Jeep or bro-dozer.

True, but Braid 17" wheels aren't available with the same offset options as 16" are, according to their website. No idea why.

That was exactly my question. it seems the 16" can be had in a huge variety of offsets, but the 17 not so much. I'm going to reach out to them and see.

No thats great information, leave it up here. I've pretty much understood the backspacing/offset info, but it gets very confused online and lots of mis-information.


So my understanding is my OEM Rims are 16x6, but that is the inside measurement of the rim, so add 1" for rim lip. So 7 div 2 = 3.5 with zero offset which cruiser dan stated. I've heard 3.5~3.75 would probably be ok without spacers, but 4 and up probably won't work without a spacer.

If you can find them. The 17” rims that I had on the PZJ70 that @Honger is also using will work without spacers using a skinny tire. The BS on them is slightly less than 4” as I have found by physical measurement when I had the set. I would have actually kept them and used them if my HZJ77 didn’t have flares. I noticed you have flares so it may look funny to you.

According to their website:
It is available in 16" and 17" diameter and 4" to 11" wide. The direct offset range is from -25 to +50. It can be fitted on big 4x4 vehicle's PCD, therefore the adaptation possibilities are very large.

So in theory, you could order a 17x7 (8" overall width) and have 4" backspacing. Throw some -12mm offset and boom, 3.5" backspaced 17" rim that will fit 285's. I've sent an inquiry in to see about the custom orders.

EDIT: I think I can scratch Braid custom wheels off my list.

At nearly $1000 a rim after shipping, thats just way too much for me. I'd be pushing $6,000 for 5 rims and tires.
Too rich for me, but they are a good option for a custom wheel for someone.

So I talked with the Braidusa guy, Paul, very nice and helpful bloke.

He said we have a few options to get to that 3.5~3.75" backspacing range.

#1 custom order, and yes it would be $828 per wheel.

#2 modify a stock size. Braid can basically build up the mounting surface of the rim to make a "built in spacer" for lack of better word. It's $65 a rim extra. So with this I can use the 17x8 stock rim and be a bit cheaper than the custom sizes.

4 weeks to build the rims:
17x8 standard rim, 4.5" backspacing $507.00
-25mm build up to get to ~3.5" backspacing $65

$572 per rim

drop shipped to me = $120/wheel or I can wait for a container thats coming in June/July for $52 a rim.


So for $692/rim I can have a custom braid 17x8" 3.5 backspaced wheel.
$692x5 = $3460 in Rims to my door. ouch.


So there are options there are lots of options as they don't like saying No to people, it's just how much do you want to spend to get there. Hopefully this is helpful for someone.

Yep. Although that add on pretty much kills any resale other than LC folks if I ended up not liking them.

I know it is possible to DIY modify steel wheels too, at least to change offset/backspacing. I had a long conversation with a guy who had done a bunch, he recommended setting the wheel up on a trailer spindle/hub rigidly mounted or clamped to a work surface and using a dial indicator to get it running true. The key (apparently) was to just tack each rim to wheel center contact point until they were all tacked and the wheel ran true, then weld opposites with time in between to cool. I have never tried it, but it didn't sound too difficult.

Why not steelies? I don’t recall if the Summit steelies come in a 17 but they do in a 16 for sure. There is FJCruiser holed steelies but bs is to much.

You guys are right about bs, FJ60 is the same. Ten years ago there was more options for wheels with that bs.

Summit does carry the steel wheel in 17". They seem to be in the $300ish range for the smooth vintiques. I'll have to check and see what the custom sizes are.

There was also a Tacoma 17" steelie used a spare only (pictured below) but the bore and bolt pattern works. P/N 42601-AD050 Hole design was a little different layout too.

Also these would require BS modification also.

That’s a good thought changing the stock wheels. Just like @AirheadNut was talking about.

I'm partial to 70 series without flares... Not sure if that's a consideration as well, though if you're going to 17" and chunky wide tires then certainly keep the flares (I had to go down from 265/75R16 to 235/85R16 on my Troopy to stop getting rocks chipping my outer fender).

I know the soft-top hoods have some reinforcement in them, but I should be ok as long as I'm not out bouncing around real hard with the windshield down.


The next step has been the folding windshield wiper arms. Those have been a bit tricky to find but Dave at Japan4x4 seems to have located some stuff that should work for me. Waiting to see the timeframe on those.
