Charles -

I read your post on my phone and for a minute was concerned that you had taken delivery on a HJ47......

Contrats on the number plate!

Been there ..... Done that. :)
I enjoyed my 40 Series but probably won't go back in that direction again.

Thanks to a new brake booster, I now have brakes that won't scare the cr*p out of me. :)

We share that history. I like my 73 much more than my (then) new FJ40.

STUPID BRAKES ..... :bang:
Despite replacing the brake booster, which was faulty, the original issue ( no pedal travel and so so brakes ) is unfortunately back. The next step will be to replace the brake master cylinder with a larger BMC from a FJCruiser and install a brake compensator which hopefully will correct the issue.

Are you sure you have enough vacuum? Lack of vacuum would make the pedal hard to push, and little travel. My brakes work fine, but the clutch runs out of vacuum when holding the brake. Pull and plug the vac line, and see if you feel a change.

Hold on Charles! If you go to a larger diameter master, you'll get less travel, not more, unless you grow the brake lines too.

Thanks for the tip.....
The vacuum system was throughly inspected before we started replacing parts and it appears to be functioning normally.

Replacing the brake master cylinder is not a done deal, but simply an option. A friend put a FJCruiser BMC and compensator
on a restored HJ47 and the results were great so I am at least considering that option.

All of the stock parts in good order will give a nice pedal feel. Are all your wheel bearings tight and the rear brakes all working properly and well adjusted? They are normally the source of such issues.

A complete inspection of the rear drum brake system is on the to-do list. :)
Thanks ......

Where Dp/Dt = 0 A wider ram moves a shorter distance to move the same amount of fluid. Archimedes didn't need to understand Newtonian physics, he had this nailed down laying on his back, while being fed grapes by virgin (s), in a toga. And the force and effort to move the ram that pushes the fluid is almost exclusively weight in this case, with a wee bit of friction, (weight of the ram + the fluid) ounces of difference, maybe, vs your right foot, or left for you guys with pedals on the wrong side, measured in 10s of ft. pounds.
Now a compensater may be something, but I think you may have a simpler issue, like differential valve or ?

So Newton was not the guy who invented those delicious fig cookies?

might have been his privileged son, but the Olivia with John on the end, well...

I'm starting to realize my rural education left out a lot of important stuff.

so you checked each wheel for proper operation of specific braking, correct?
you checked all lines for kinks or dents?
you checked for proper adjustment of rear brakes?
you checked the "towers" at the back backing plates for proper engagement AND release?
cheers

Started off with the easy stuff .... Replaced the brake booster because it was known to be marginal. Thanks for the tips and information.
*My work schedule is greatly interfering with my "to do" list. : )
