Its most likely the sending unit. The riostat part of it goes bad and it doesn't send the correct signal.

Thanks for that information. Even though I have the rear tank in reserve, I still don't like seeing the front gauge set on empty and having to estimate how much fuel is left in that tank. I am to much of a believer in "Murphy's Law" to allow the situation to persist.:)
 
Come to think of it I may have a new sending unit for the main tank. If you trouble shoot yours and that is the problem I have one for ya.

Thanks for the offer. According to "beno" the rheostat is not a live part in the North American catalog which in laymen terms means it may be difficult to procure.

Is that meaning that you can actually run without the main tank empty by using the aux tank fuel?? Aren't they link to each other??:confused:

I don't have a schematic of the fuel system however to my knowledge the two tanks operate independently of each other. I ran exclusively on the rear tank for several weeks to confirm it functioned properly and I am now running on the front tank which is how I discovered the "wacked" fuel gauge.
 
both fuel tanks are seperate items, you can run or the other, most people usually run the rear empty first then run the front.
if your sender does not work in front tank rem ove sender (access panel behinde drivers seat) and get auto elec to check, if this is ok may have faulty guage in dash. keep in mind it is a 27 year old vehicle
 
Thanks for the information. I will pop open the access door next week and take a look. I do indeed realize the Cruiser is 27 years old however it is my goal to have all the "important stuff" work the way Toyota intended. At least that is my goal.:)

As LRU pointed out they are totally separate,which is the best way.
There is a little push button switch on the rear tank fuel gauge pod and you just press that to choose tanks.
Light on means rear tank in use.

I think the petrol models,FJ75,FZJ75 are different but I cant remember how

"Light on means rear tank in use"........It would have been nice if Toyota had installed a second light that would illuminate if the rear tank valve failed to open.

Or a light for each tank.
However I think you will find its a fairly reliable system. Most of the problems Ive seen is when the valves get blocked with sediment,rather than the valves themselves or the wiring not working.
I switch my tanks over regularly so I know they are working.

Im going to swap the rear one for a 140 ltr Longranger one day.

A lot of people who own 75 series in remote areas strap 1 or 2 200 litre fuel drums to the tray in the back and hand pump fuel into the tanks,you can get some miles out of those:D
 
had hard would it be to obtain a complete switching system at the wreckers. Valves, wiring, sub-tank gauge and switch etc. I'm running dual tanks in my 79 project and don't have the first bit. I need everything and would like to go stock if possible.

I dug thru my pile of 70 parts and I have one complete 75 series main tank and I have a spare sending unit. It is a brand new toyota part. I don't need any of this b/c I'm using the 80 series tank in my build. sent you a pm.

Today was a bad day in Cruiserville.....On the way to work this morning ( about 1 hour south of home ) the clutch slave cylinder shed parts along with all of its fluid.:bang: Fortunately I was between gears and was able to coast to a stop. Now the bad part......my shiny Land Cruiser was towed back to town behind my brother-in-laws dirty ole F-250 which I am sure is on "You tube" by now. I may have to go in hiding for a while.:)
Owning a 27 year old Cruiser can be fun some days.:D
 
s***, old man, it was a perfect oportunity to learn to drive without the benefit of using a clutch.
you blew it.

shut off engine at stop light, put in first, start in first using starter crawl, speed up to 2500 rpm, let off throttle for a second while putting light pressure on the shifter into neutral, once disengaged from 1st then let rpms drop while putting gentle pressure on second gear location. once the rpms match the rolling speed the shifter will drop into second with no grinding or embarassing noises, repeat for 3rd and 4th gears.
when down shifting then you need to pop into neutral at a low rpm, rev engine steadily till proper rpm is achieved then down shift to lower gear. repeat as needed.

many of us have had to come back out of the mountains and onto the highway home using this tech.

You really think I am that smart.....man I got you fooled.:D I was also looking at bumper to bumper traffic for the next 10 to 15 miles so I would have ended up killing someone.:)

"silly old boy, getting towed home behind a Ford ... sheesh" .....Fortunately it was a short chain so I am actually telling everyone that I was pushing the F250 back home. ( if the politicians can "spin" a story so can I.)
 
I drove around with no clutch pedal for over a month in a mini truck. Swapped in a 5spd in place of an auto...the pedal assembly got lost in transit. It took me a while to find another one. I think the mini truck tranny is much easier than the h55 though. My hj60 can be a pain in the ass to shift without the clutch.

sucks you had to get towed by a ford...I think i have and extra slave and master cyl I can throw in the good box for you of free. But I would buy a new one instead so you don't have to get towed by a ford again.

If it makes you feel any better I pulled two stuck fords off the beach yesterday with my 60. The same guy got them both stuck not 100 yards from the access ramp. He was a real prize...thought he knew everything. For the life of me I couldn't figure out how he got them both stuck. Then at the end of the whole ordeal he told me he just move here from California. Enough said. (no offense to anyone on here from cali)

At least it was a holiday and very few people saw us on the route we took.:) That is the one problem with having the only HJ75 in the region ( you can't say ....oh that was not me you saw:D)

I am not sure my butt and back could survive the normal fuel capacity much less 140 liters.:) I guess the extra weight might improve the ride a little bit.
