I visited Australia back in 2011 and while I was there I was surrounded by HJ60's, Troopies both new and old and every amazing model of land cruiser that we never got here in the USA. I have several land rover projects that have never made it to the road due to an overwhelming amount of work required to finish and i really wanted something I could just buy and drive. I contemplated importing something from Australia but in the end decided to look for a 60 just because they were sold here and have a good reputation. I began searching CL around the country, ebay, and the classifieds section on MUD and eventually ran across a clean looking 84 out in Colorado. It was being sold by a Toyota used car place which always makes me a little nervous but some research on them seemed to be positive. I ran a carfax on the VIN and everything in that realm also looked good. Lastly a friend of mine lives in that same town and she went over, took a ton more photos for me, and test drove the truck and then sent me a full report.

So now the truck sits in my friends driveway in Colorado and I plan to fly out in November to pick it up and drive it home to Vermont. I plan to swing in the local Sears (if there is one still in business there) and buy a metric tool kit once I arrive. I'll stock up on some spare fluids and probably change the oil before I leave. I'll look everything else over just to make sure a heater hose isnt going to imminently blow out but I'll bring some gorilla tape as a backup :)

Right now the truck is 100% stock and I dont have any plans to go crazy with it. I might do some different bumpers down the road and change the tires to something a little more aggressive but nothing that makes it miserable to drive as this will be a fun vehicle, might tow a motorcycle or utility trailer or car dolly on occasion.

The chassis looks nice and solid but I need to treat/paint it before it spends much time in Vermont. Also I do see the bushings are shot.

Cannot remember if this was a leak or a drip from the AC or something else. My friend wasn't up to speed on how to ID the fluid.

The interior is clean and the seats are in good condition. It has about 203,000 miles on it.

Nice truck, engine bay looks pretty tidy.

Leak appears to be a/c vent if it was running, another possibility is brake fluid from clutch slave, but you would know as the clutch would not work.

Touch the fluid and smell next time, that is how you identify. :)

The carfax report indicated it was register in New Mexico up until around 2005 and then at mileage 202,693 it failed an emissions inspection. Between 2005 and 2015 the mileage only increased by 500 miles. Then the dealer took ownership of it and then I got it. I think my friend said there were some military base parking permit stickers on it. So it sounds like it didnt move for a good period of time.

Great find... but part of me cringes to know that this Cruiser is going to live in Vermont. Please tell me you're going to keep it in a garage and only drive it in the summer. ;)

I wanted to find one that I could play with but one that I didn't have to deal with nasty body work. So I found this one and it's nice enough that it will be a camping vehicle. And maybe tow a utility trailer now and then. It won't get to live in a garage until I build one but it will be covered and protected and will stay out of the salt for sure

Best color EVER! You are going to love that truck. I really am jealous of everything being stock. The patina on the frame looks all to familiar.

Flying to Colorado on Thursday to collect my 60 which has been residing at a friend's house in Grand Junction. I'll spend a few days out there visiting various friends and slowly work my way back to Vermont. Renewed my AAA membership with a couple hundred free miles of towing and i'll stock up on repair stuff before heading out. Will post a road trip report when I get home...or from wherever I break down :)

Nice find!
If you are coming through the front range and need any engine parts let me know! I just swapped out for a v8 and have just about everything laying around. Including nearly new MAF headers, carb, desmog, etc

Or just swing by for a beer! Lol

Arrived on Thursday and started playing with truck on Friday. Drives pretty well and starts ok...getting the hang of starting techniques....x number of pumps or partial pedal depress etc. truck needs a bunch of little things and the lists have started

Picking up basic tune up things and getting ready for long drive home. Discovered the fuel cap is missing :/ trying to find one local is unsuccessful and Toyota dealer closed at noon. I'll be in Fort Collins in a couple of days and may check out Rocky Mountain cruisers in Denver. Recommended? Open to other suggestions. Everyone in grand junction is closed for the weekend or unable to get ahold of.

Picked up NGK plugs, a cap rotor and wires from autozone....figure maybe not the best choice but better than what is in here and hopefully good enough to get me home where I can source the proper parts later. The NGK being a good option though. Gapped the plug to .031" and just test fired and it started up much better and is already idling smoother.

The air filter wasn't too bad and the oil looks nice and clean. I did note that the oil in the power steering reservoir is clear so I will try and drain that and put in the dextron III atf I picked up.

Found the wire to the gage temp sensor was broken and I fixed it. Unfortunately the gage still doesn't work. The rest of the Gage's do so I figure that rules out the fuse. So I imagine there is still a break in the wire, the sender is bad, or the gage is bad. I tried grounding the wire as that usually makes the gage go to its max position and that did nothing. So I am down to wire is broken elsewhere or gage issue. Thinking next step is to get to the back of the cluster and check the continuity from the gage to the sensor.

Am I correct in thinking that the wire should have 12v on it all the time and if I ground it the gage should go to full hot?

Don’t ground that gauge... and that wire is not +12 volts... I pull choke full out, pump one 3/4 pedal pump, and turn key with foot off of gas... hth...

Drove about 300 miles today from Grand Junction to friend's house in Fort Collins. I was thinking of stopping in to check out an fj45 in Frisco but didn't want to drive I70 on the dark given that 65mph seemed to be a happy place for the truck.

I had filled up with gas a couple days ago and then filled again this afternoon as I was heading out. The first fillup I went 48 miles on 4.1 gallons for 11.7mpg. That was before the tuneup and with lots of slow in town driving. I've gone 300 miles on the current tank and I'll fill up in the morning and see how we did yesterday

Welcome to the addiction. As your bombing across the US in that thing just smile and wave as your passed.

Awesome man looks like an adventure! If you go down near Colorado Springs check out redline land cruiser. Might be able to find a gas cap if you haven't already.

Looks cold hope that heater works!

Looks like I made it to Fort Collins just in time as it's snowing this morning. This might have been problematic yesterday as the 60 has more summer oriented tires on it at the moment. The heater does work but I think it needs a warmer thermostat as it seems rather cold blooded. Today will be a good test of the cold start. As recommended above the full choice 3/4 pedal push worked great yesterday morning
