Look at @wngrog recent thread where he put in the AFI system for fuel injection. And if you are getting that good of mpgs out of your truck she is running stellar. I am lucky if I pull 14mpg on all highway, but then again I usually keep right around 70mph (2750rpm). Keeping her lower speed may result in better MPGs.

Having a running issue. Started a couple of days ago and is getting worse. I thought it was gas quality but it has stayed with me regardless of fuel. I thought it was the fuel filter but a new filter made no difference. I thought it was the gas tank breathability and there was definitely an inrush of air when I took off the stock fuel cap....but after driving with the cap off completely it's still happening. Seems to be only after about 20-40 miles of driving....guessing it's a heat issue and basically it feels like the carb is fuel starving....it was happening at partial throttle on the interstate but if I floored it then I could kind of power through it. I feel like it's related to on or two jetting passages in the carb. I've read lots of posts about issues but nothing seems to point out this. I do need to replace all the vacuum lines still. Any suggestions?

Also...seeing that this truck was from Colorado and New Mexico might it have been jetted for higher elevation? If so it would be leaning out as I got lower in elevation which would councide with my observation of when this started....but I'm not sure if they jetted them for region or not

Take the air cleaner off and with it running put your hand over the carburetor until it sucks your hand into it and dies. This will backflush your carburetor.

It’s called a Redneck Rebuild.

If you had small stuff in the carb already before the new filter this could purge it.

@wngrog i did the redneck rebuild a couple of times for good measure this morning and the truck felt good for the last 100 miles on Ontarios Highway 401. I just crossed back into the USA and filled up. I'll see how she runs the rest of the way home. That may not be the end all repair but I think it has certainly helped.

Put my new H4's in last night and picked up a brand new gas cap and thermostat from the dealer this morning. Little wins.
Dont change that thermo yet. I wouldn't add any potential probs before winter. air bubbles can cause sensor probs, that lead to driveability issues you don't want to mess with over winter.

Most likely the heat problem is actually pine needles/ leaves down inside the air intake blocking the heat exchanger above the blower. You also have a rear heater to help.

The hiccup is usually the EGR top hat valve clogged with chunks o carbon, you can tap on it when at idle, will sometimes clear it. If it is clogging jets, do the Redneck thing, then let cool and pull off the window on front of carb, and blow out gas and chunks inside w carb cleaner.

Can't believe they let you drive interstate without warning you about the oil galley tho

Oil Galley Plug Fixes

All good info. I'm about 100 miles from home after driving about 2400. I will read up on the oil galley threads when I get home. I won't be driving this over the winter as it's way too clean to let any New England salt brine even get close to it.

Thanks for the heads up on the EGR and the oil galley. Truck ran good today and most of my driving was 55 mph roads with lots of throttle variation and twisty hills. It was much happier in this format than just droning down the interstate.

I also changed the thermostat last week and put the old upper gasket back in after reading about it. Had good heat all the way home and proper cooling fan operation too.

Just checked the galley as mentioned in the links. Looks ok. The whole engine is covered in grease and oil but there is no sign of oil coming from that specific location. And in 2400 miles of driving I lost about .5 quarts of oil. Never had any drips on the ground other than a small spot under the transmission.

Planning to go through everything so this mission is just to get home.
