I just purchased a 1982 fj40 with factory ac, ps, pb, and chrome wheels. It has these seats in them. Are they original. Tracks and all seem to be, but wasn’t sure about the cloth. Age wise looks like it should be right? I want to restore it to original over a time.
Thanks

Cloth was never an option in the US. Gray vinyl is what was only option in the US. If the chrome wheels are Toyota wheel good chance from a 60 series. 15" white spoke is what Toyota used in the US 81-83 model FJ40s. Possible a PO liked chrome. The wiper arms would be black. Those look to be off a 75-77 model.

Do they look like the correct seats, just recovered or the wrong seats all together?

Picture of the back would help. The latch to recline the seat looks correct.

This is the back of my 79 FJ40. Passenger seat is out of a Middle East pickup but driver's seat is original. The passenger bucket looks the same as the driver's seat.

I’ll take a picture when I get home. The seat mechanisms look correct, backs of the seats are vinyl I know. I have buckets with the heater under the console so mine looks different than the above picture

That passenger seat is not stock to my 79. In 79 the rear heater was behind the seat with a small plastic center console. Mine didn't have the rear heater and Center console was missing. I did locate one years ago.

But plan is too use a later style like you have.

I have the original passenger seat as well as the seats out of an 80 model where the short center console from. The rear heater moved to under the console 8/80 the start of the 81 model year. Those cruisers without a rear heater continued with the small center console.

Took some more pictures.

Your headrests look correct. CNA you feel the back and tell if there is panel that matches my picture above?

John, did all 79+ seats have the metal back? I was thinking they were both ways but maybe that is the earlier mid 70's seats.

i think those are stock seats reupholstered with cloth. The back, headrests and brackets look like my ‘81.
That’s kind of what I thought. They look right, just cloth is an odd choice.

Does your passenger seat do anything special to get in the back from that side or do they just tip forward and slide up a bit? Do you have to get in from the back to use the back seats?

thanks

Paul as far as I know all bucket seat 9/72 on have a back metal panel. I have my 3/79 and a set out of a 80 model which both have metal back. My 2/73 while a different style bucket has metal backs. If they changed 8/80+ to vinyl back I'm not sure.

Those seats are correct aside from the cloth material vs factory vinyl; so probably recovered at some point. Passenger seat has a pedal at bottom outer rear to flip seat forward so passengers can get in the back. I believe that the metal back panels went away in 1981 model year. My 1980 has the metal back panels. Nice looking 40!

The LX models (in Australia at least) has cloth but in zebra stripes with a drivers bucket and bench with metal backs (same in back as they were sold as a 6 seater). Also has 16 inch chrome plated wheels and 3 front wipers. The head rests look correct as does the seat adjustments. The cloth may have been added by a previous owner. My 1978 had smooth black vinyl but later non-LX models had a contoured grey as in post 4.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I’m going to recover what I have and go from there.
