With the user name I expected this to be in Boulder!

Who’da thunk it was a 20 footer?

How would one remove flares like that and what kind of body work would need to be done afterwards?

Drill out rivets, then get the replacement tub fender lips from a place like real steel cruiser parts. The price will depend on how much you do yourself.

Not me, obviously. And when I bought it, it was raining outside and in a dark garage.

As mentioned, I drilled out the four rivets holding each flare on, to behold a major hack job. (pictures to come). It is a prime example on how NOT to cut your fenders out. They cut them so high, they cut into the fender well, exposing the interior to the elements. So, naturally they caulked the gaps created by hacking on the cruiser. Then, rivet them on just enough to hold them there for a few pics. One side had three rivets, the other four. I guess that's good, fewer holes to fill.

A liberal application of cash. Not worth it

Nope, not worth it at ALL. I feel I'm beating a dead horse, but we settled on 19K, sans bumper/winch. However, was told I would receive correct mirrors, OEM bumpers, seats, and a few other original parts. What I did get were seats out of some other car, a rivet wheel with a tire that won't hold air, garbage bumpers (bent beyond salvage), a box of rotten shackle bushings and shackles, and a mini-truck spare tire retainer. Storage wars feel, for sure. Bummed there wasn't an accordion in there. I could have at least rocked some polka while realizing I overpaid by 10K.

The good news? I've learned my lesson and I'm going to do this cruiser right. Please check out Another run of the mill 78 FJ40 restoration. to continue the discussion.
