Aloha Mudders!
Woo Hoo! Finally Posting my Honolulu frame off!!!
I got my FJ40 in Washington State on December 2008 and brought it to Honolulu in Summer of 2009. After finally getting it to pass Honolulu State inspection, I got to drive it around. Every where I took it to get inspected they would have a different thing it wouldn't pass, like not having a real bumper. I'll explain in pics later.
Because of my underway deployments with the ship I was on, it sat a lot and was deteriorating pretty quickly. Which is why I titled it Frame of Preservation. I don't think I can totatlly restore it out here because of the price of shipping and the lack of companies shipping to Hawaii. Although Amazon is pretty good when you have their prime membership. I transferred from my Cutter to a Land Billet, so now I have the time to work on it here and there. Okay enough of the writing and now start posting.

First Pic is when I first got the FJ40 and took it somewhere in the mountains of Washington State. Second Pic is before I shipped it to Honolulu. Third is right before I started taking it apart.

So I started taking it down to the frame in March of this year.
Here of the pics when I started.

Nice 40, what are your plans for it? Please get rid of those fugly wheels.

Don't worry so much about getting parts, worst case scenario another mudder will need to buy the parts and ship to you. This is a great group of people on here.

Whats a land billet? Ii'm guessing that's a military or mariner slang

Thanks Rattlecan. Sorry Wheels are staying, they were kind of a gift from my bro who got a good deal on it. It's the least of my worries for now. I think he got five wheels and tires from a friend for a hundred bucks.
So far I removed all the rust and replaced the rear sill. I also sanded down the tub and painted it with Rust Seal.
By the way, "land billet" is being stationed on land. I still work on the cutters, but I don't have to go out that much any more until I transfer again.

This was where I was at with the tub about a month ago.

Here are some pics of the rear sill and the replacement.
This was my first time welding and I learned a lot, I used a friend's mig welder. He showed me once and then I just figured it out from there.

I brought the cut out pieces to a metal shop here in honolulu and they made me what I needed for $250.00. I have to mention this was my first build besides doing some body work and paint over twenty years ago, and I probably would have done it differently.

Hi all,

FJ40RobQ, nice job on the body tub!

Be sure to paint the tub well, salt air is rough on auto sheet metal!

The Eastwood Company sells many fine automotive paint products. They have anti rust coatings, etc.

Regards,

Alan

Thanks Alan,

I've been checking out the Eastwood Products, but I have to make sure they can ship paint chemicals to Hawaii.

There's a place out here that sells KBS Coating products which is similar to the POR 15 products.

So I probably should clarify about shipping.
Of course anything can be shipped to Hawaii by boat, but by air no Haz Mat is shipped. Once I waited six months for a paint product to get here because the company kept saying their shipment

Oops, accidentally pressed send before I finished.

The company kept telling me that their shipment was delayed. I think they were waiting for more orders to come in, so they could have one bulk shipment by ship.

So I started powder coating for the first time because it was easy to order and cheap.

Here are some pics of my seat frames. I wanted to practice and try it on something that wouldn't be seen if I messed it up.

After finishing the rear sill replacement and painting the Tub with rustseal I moved on to flip the tub and prep the bottom.

After cleaning it with a degreaser and wire brushing it, it still looked dirty. The rubber undercoating was loose so it was easy to remove but the rest is still a work in progress with a wire wheel cup attached to a grinder.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to remove the rubber undercoating an easier way?

Slow progress. I didn't realize how time consuming it would be to remove the undercoat. It took me five days. Maybe a total of 40 hours. I first started wire wheeling, then tried heating and scraping and then using a paint thinner to remove undercoat in hard to reach areas. Now I'm back to wire wheeling. I think I should have just stuck to getting a good quality wire wheel and wire wheeled the whole thing. Or I should have just paid the Honolulu price of $600.00 to have it sand blasted. Lesson ex learned for sure.

Probably should have clarified that I wasn't done with the undercarriage. Since I've come this far, I still have to wire wheel some more to complete. Then I plan to Spray epoxy primer and then spray Gator Guard II.

Just wondering, when I was in you could get some super stuff for stripping and sealing from the Military..really heavy duty stuff...can you not get there?

I'm not able to any more because my job now is about training the trainer. Besides they've been getting more strict about having certain hazmats. I know some of our shops are not even allowed to have acetone. At least in the Coast Guard.
