Not much of a wrench, dad is, little brother is, it skipped me. Bought my bucket list ride in 2007 and drove her until she had a stroke in 2010. She is titled as a 1974 but I'm not sure that is correct. Can someone tell me what years came with 2 fuel tanks? I have the tank under the passenger seat and a tank in the back. My data plate is /has been buggered up so I can't get much off of it. Have decided that looking at it in the shop for 7 years is enough and it is time to give the old girl a new heart. I have been trolling this site for a long time and the community seems helpful so going forward I will be asking lots of questions and looking for helpful tips from those that have done everything wrong the first two or three times.

Can you read the numbers on the forward right frame rail? That'll give you the frame date. Some photos will help guys figure it out for you. Include the engine.

So here are 2 pics that don't suck to bad, first pics with new tablet. Did some digging and wire brush work, I think she is actually a 75. She came complete has 2 factory fuel doors and all the glass is good, no frame mods, Engine is a farm swapped GM 6 (unknown year or miles) no juice in one cylinder and the clutch is gone. Got a fresh GM 6 with roughly 5k on it for a new heart. When I look at all the wires coming through the firewall I get overwhelmed.(recommendations appreciated)
I know I am fooling myself by thinking the hardest part is over because she is in my garage, but I will be able to say "Built not bought"

1973 had 3 speed tranny, 1974 had 4 speed tranny- - -easy deal.

Some early 74s had a three speed from the factory. 74 also started the model with the single light rear license plate holder. Came see the back frame member is set up for the three lamp tail light. Hard top sides has the screws showing for ambulance doors (75+). What does the B pillar section look like where the door catch bolts on? 75 does changed and the door catch changed too causing that area of theB pillar to be wider.

Look at the door strikers.

Round taillights?

In reguards to wiring, Coolerman's website and parts are great for your factory wiring. For the stuff specific to your FJ40, that will be harder since the harness has been hacked. Toyota's color coding works fine, so you'll have to trace wires back to their factory color, figure out what it is, and go from there.

What size GM 6 are you putting in? 250, the big 292?

You'd sure be happy with a smaller Holley 390 or 450 with vacuum secondaries on that Offy manifold, or better yet, one of my adapters to let you run fuel injection on the Offy.

@bigndn is a long-time mud/cruiser guy that lives in the Boise area these days. Chad is a good guy and, even though he sold his 40 a few years ago, I'm sure he'd be willing to stop by to enjoy a beer or two and talk cruisers with you. He could answer your LC questions and give you some good advice going forward.

Can see the rear frame member has a cutout for the rectangular tail lights with after market lights over the opening, plus can see the holes to mount the corner reflector. Picture of he B pillar would clear up if the tub is a 74 or not.

Looked on my phone may see the 75+ door striker. Next two pictures look like driver's A pillar and passenger's fender VIN plaques have been removed. Can see the two screw holes for the passenger's fender Plaque. The passenger's front frame rail still should have the VIN stamped in it. Frame charts online that will date it to month and year. Oldest one I know of is on Specter Off Road's site.

I'm looking at a decent '71 40 with a used up and out of the unit stock f engine, If I buy it it will get the 292, basically a 4.8 liter 6 with the SM 465 tranny and a later model 4 speed xfer. I think it's a natural,

It's the 292, with an
Offenhauser intake and Hollywood carb, little brother will fab a header then out through a flowmaster (I like noise)
more so than the SBC. Even though My GMC 350 in my old dude has never failed me.

Nice rig. Let me know if you are going to replace the pre '75 turn signals you have on there with the correct '75 and later front turn signals... Which are available as factory and aftermarket reasonably as opposed to the '74 and older stuff. I interested in them... I may have some parts for yours to swap for them.
Thanks,
Will
