First time user of this forum and new FJ40 owner. I have tons of questions about what I’m looking at. My dad recently gave my son a 9/73 FJ40. It has been covered up in the backyard for years. I’m trying to figure out what some of the components are and if they can be removed. There are 2 diaphragms I’m guessing EGR. And a hose connection that has no hose. It’s all original and has only had oil changes according to the old man.

That is a 1974 CALIFORNIA spec setup. One year, one market only. You will need to cap off the tube on the carburetor for sure. And you will need to remove the EGR, which on that one model year threaded directly into the intake manifold. You can find a plug at the hardware store that will fill the threaded hole just fine. If not, you can buy one from a vendor here (I sell them ,but I have a $100 minimum order.)

Mark is telling you that the EGR valve (the bit connected to the intake manifold) can be removed. That is the part on this rig that would be called the EGR. There does not appear to have an EGR cooler like later rigs. The evaporative control (the thing you are circling attached to the fender) can be removed as well. You should either search on this form for "desmog" or you can find the emissions manual for the 73 at sor (probably a pdf of it also available online) if you wanted to understand all the bits and pieces of emissions. Desmog is complicated enough that reading up on it is warranted.

I removed all of that on my 1978 about 40+ years ago and changed the carburetor and installed a header. Get the factory emissions manual and it should provide the information on what the components are.

Add number to your pics. That may help. The EGR is on the first pic. This is only used when the rpms go up like driving on the road. And closes when in idle. I would bet it's probably clog and stuck in cosed position. People remove them. I actually like to have all the emissions crap on my cruisers. I have79, it went bad, could not procure one so I used one for fj60 and made it work. Made the hole bigger on the intake where it mounts. Replacing the carb. with one that was made not to have emissions is best. But you still can use the original carburetor, it'll take a lot more effort. Run some seafoam in your gas tank if it starts.

Thank you for the info. I haven’t ran it yet. My Dad told me it ran when he parked it in the 90’s, Just trying to figure out what is what. There is no connection to it other than the thermistor and cap tube . I ordered a manual for it but everything I looked up doesn’t show both pieces.

You could a search for emissions oem manual on ebay or here on mud. You can do search on "how to desmog.." or "how to start engine that been sitting " here on mud or Google.

If you do try to start it bypass the gas tank And a different container. Make sure to have an inline filter.
