Hey all - New to this forum and a new 1970 FJ40 owner out of AZ!

I posted an intro to the AZ clubhouse forum, but figured I would post here too.. Currently in search of a trusted mechanic in the Scottsdale/Phoenix area and couldn't seem to find a more recent thread about it (could be that I'm just a noobie). Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Very nice looking ride. We just went thru another 7 day heat wave of near 100 degrees…. I know I need a/c. I don’t know how you do it in Arizona ….saw those temps over 105 last week. Good luck with it

Since you're new here I'll sorta try not to be too rough.
Here on 'Mud, we excell at helping others work on their LandCruisers. We suck at telling people where they can have someone else work on their rigs.
Do you know which end of a hammer to hold?
LandCruisers thrive on attention. You absolutely must be able to wrench on it yourself, to a certain degree, to deserve it. Unless it's, like a 200 series.
Yours is not. You don't have 30K mile maintenance schedules, you have every other day fiddling.
The absolutely best thing to do is to cater a brunch in your driveway for your local LandCruiser club. Let them take a look, discuss.

Agree with Pighead. Part of the "fun" is learning what makes these things tic. If you get in a bind, folks on here are very gracious with helpful suggestions.

As they say.. its a dry heat hah! Yeah, its miserable.

The brunch idea sounds awesome - great suggestion.

Definitely plan to continue wrenching on it myself, but wanted a second opinion from a specialist as to first priorities. Since you excel at working on LandCruisers I'll lay out the current issue I'm facing.. I've got gear oil leaking from the seal between the transfer case and parking brake. The parking brake currently doesn't work at all. I imagine I'll need to replace the brake shoes, seal, springs, output shaft etc. Any experience or advice?

Happened on mine. Get the transfer case seal kit from SOR or City Racer, pull off the d/s and get after it. The coarse spline output shaft needs some FIPG or RTV to seal up properly after you replace the seal, or you'll get more oil coming through. Shaft itself should be fine, good to replace the shoes if you have them, mine were fine after cleaning them up, ymmv. Do the one on the front output as well.

Also can't believe I'm your first :flipoff2:, what is this place coming to...

A common occurance and fairly easy to fix. Georg is the guy for parts for this. I'm running his double seal kit. It could be the parking brake cable too.
Plenty of threads on this, visit the FAQs and learn the search.
