Australia, same place you sourced the one for the swap you are doing for your buddy...

So it wasn't a one-off, he has a supply! Very cool.

Hope you enjoy wiring. That 2UZ is going to require quite a bit.

Thus my thought to go with the Spitronics... It promises to make that part easy. Time or money... Im choosing to throw money at the wiring part of this.

If I were you I would buy a complete Tundra with a 2UZ. They can be found with relatively low miles but abused bodies so the prices are reasonable) and then buy the 20k mile auto + mated cruiser offset transfer case I have here (after I get the manual up and running they will be for sale). That way you get the cheapest 2UZ with all of the dodads you might need to get it running and a cruiser transmission & transfer case (the tundra case is not the right offsets for cruiser axles)
Or buy a complete FZJ100 or LX470...

The FJ40 has a custom built bell housing to an H55 transmission.

How would you describe the way the H55 shifted? Was it notchy like the 4 speed transmission. The 4 spd is a great durable box, but like you said, it is slow to shif and very notchy and truck like. I was wondering if the H55 shifted the same way or was it a more modern smoother transmission? Anyon have experience w the H151?

I have an H55 in my 40 and in my 60, both with a 2F... I can't say they shift at all like my son's Mazda 5 speed... they are truck transmissions. It's a truck, so I'm ok with that.
I will let you know if the H151 is "better"... ;-)

The H55 behind the 2UZ was very familiar feeling, just with B A L L S....

I'm sure. Did you find that with all that power you were having to row the gears a lot? The 2F seems to lug along at times when you don't feel like shifting gears. I have to say for my LV I would prefer to just push the pedal and go. ESP since it will never see any trails. Did you do the H55 conversion in your 40?

I had a standard 4 speed in my first 77 and an H55 in my current 77. The H55 is very similar, in feel, to the 5-speeds in the ' 85 and '86 Mini trucks I have had.

H55 was easy. Got a split tc to match. Flipped rear springs to get a long enough rear driveshaft. Sourced a late 40 rear axle with parking brake. Modified the transmission hump for the shifter. Should put in a transmission cross member...

Garth, that helps. It definitely sounds like it shifts smoother.

Woytovich, that does NOT sound easy! You must do a lot of wrenching on your own vehicles. I think for my latest 41K original cruiser, it sounds like too much alteration and deviation from original to be a smart decision. This is exactly why I hate having low mile perfect vehicles, you are always having to be concerned about VALUE. I know some might say it would be an improvement, which it would be, and that you should do what you want bc it is my own truck, which it is, but that VALUE word is always in the back of my head.

I've done most stuff on the truck short of an engine rebuild and a diff set-up... When I said "easy" I meant that there is no "voodoo", that is: stuff that one gets to be able to do well after doing it a few times, stuff that requires "knowing" how it should feel: setting up a diff is the perfect example. The H55 install is all a pretty straightforward install of parts.

I agree, I would keep an intact 41k original all original. If the LV had had its original F and 3 speed I would have kept that but it already had a Chevy straight 6 hacked in.... not a nice install at all. The LV is mostly complete otherwise but far from "all original".

My LV was all original and complete, but I had no interest in having a original museum piece to drive bc I would never drive it. Heck, the 1982 I have is not a lot of fun to drive, I can only imagine what a 1966 three on the tree with original suspension would drive like. No thanks. Still not even sure I will like the 2F w 4spd I have in it now, which is why I have been discussing the V8 concept you are doing.

If you have an F with 3 on the tree you have to drive it in a certain way to be sure... if you can deal with that vibe then it CAN be fun. If you want to keep up with traffic and get places in a modern-style amount of time then that's not the ride for you. If I ever score an all original "old" vehicle, be it an early 40, a Willys wagon, a Volvo 1800ES or even an early 911 (I have a long wish list) it will stay all original... I have some "hot rod" aspirations too so I'd be looking for a non-original for those...

The H151 is in da houze!

Next up.... a test fit to the 2UZ

Awesome. I should think outside the box more. That will be a dream ride.
