Here are pictures of mine. It's pretty clearly a '65 from the VIN. You can't see the brass tag under the grease and grime that's stamped 66 for the year it was titled. Note the lack of a hole in the side of the cowl and in the firewall. It also had an aftermarket heater when I got it.

65 the heater was a option in the US market. I've had two 65, both 45s (LV&LP-B) neither had the heater. Not sure of the VIN on the LV as I sold it over ten years ago but my LP-B is a early 65. Biggest give away I can think if is it has the longer running boards which was a 65 model change as well as LP-B started with 65 model. 65 was the only year with the diagonal fresh air inlet on the side of the cowl. My guess is Toyota figure this way LHD and RHD could use the same one. Just needed to spot weld the blank off on opposite side for LHD and RHD models.

Wow MAC very cool. I don't know that I've seen a '65 without a factory heater very interesting find. I did go dig out my '64 and '65 parts books and sure enough they both list the heater as optional. But you are certainly the exception to the rule. I've owned 5 '65s all with the heater. Do you know much of the history on your 40 I wonder if it was sold originally in a warm market? Nice build thread BTW.

Since you guys are so knowledgable about early 40s, maybe you can tell me what other colors they used in 65? I'd like to stay with an original Toyota color, but Horizon Blue just isn't my thing.

MAC this is a paint chip collection I bought off eBay a while back. It is supposed to be Toyota factory colors from the mid 60s though not all were used on Land Cruisers.
I know the Horizontal blue, spring green, Seminole red, Lilly white, and one of the bieges and maybe the judson green were used here in the states. Some of the other early cruiser gurus might know better.

I've seen those paint chip books before, but I've never seen a 65 in Seminole Red. I think it looks great on Destin's 64 and would love to paint my cruiser that color. One source I saw here on Mud said that Seminole was '58-'64 and that Carnival Red was used in '65+. I've seen a lot of Horizontal Blue trucks, several Spring Green and Beige, and a few white.

Interestingly enough current LC is manufactured almost exactly the same. Or at least was when CDan and I were at the Yoshiwara Plant in 2010.

Unfortunately, the numbers lead to nowhere. I tried several shops and one even called PPG headquarters and nobody has a formula for Seminole Red. My local auto paint store had an old chip and I got a few samples made up to try.

the heaters are interesting re different markets. I have never seen a 1960's landcruiser of any description with a heater. but I don't know if this is the case australiawide. there are certainly cooler climes in aus than where I live.
