I was born in 1958 so the moniker 1958 has some meaning to me. But after driving the GX460 no way in hell I'm going backwards with a striped down version of a Land Cruiser. I didn't work this hard for this long to go backwards. Suspect that many my age feel the same way. And I believe that is the target market Toyota is aiming at. However if I hadn't driven the GX I would still be fat, dumb and happy if I ended up with the new LC. But pissed if I later drive a GX. Trying not to put too much money into modifying it so that I can look at the GX550 in 4-5 years when they start to come in off leases. But that isn't going so well LOL.

Same age. I didn't work this long and this hard to buy a lot of "fantasy". (That's what old timer car salesman called luxury bits added to a base model back in the day.) I'm only here to see how low the spec will be on a 1958 model. To each their own.
 
A new, actual Land Cruiser with simple ABS, Ac, heat, power Locks/windows, a decent, easily upgraded replaced stereo, manual tcase, mechanical locker, manual hubs (for the MPGs!!) and 32" AT tires will do everything anyone would ever need in any corner of the USA. Safely and cheaply and reliably
And last longer (greener!!) Than anything made today.

Reading this thread gives me images of ppl driving old model-T fords right next to a carriage and buggy with each other thinking they are more smug then the other.

The reality is that that was the last real revolution in personal travel. There is little difference between those old vehicles and what we drive today. A motor, a steering system, a couple of seats, and four wheels. We largely drive prescribed routes maintained for our convenience. Like a wagon trail or super highway. From your front door to everywhere. The basics of ground transportation remain the same. Yes, there have been incremental improvements but no earth-shattering systemic advances. Guess you have to be old enough to gain perspective.

Wake me when you've got hovercars.
 
The 1958 is fairly well equipped in my opinion. It's not as though the ride quality or performance will be significantly worse, which is what you're paying for and noticing the most. The savings are also not insignificant, which will go a long way toward buying a Model 3 to replace our car someday.
