18mm @1.5 pitch helicoil

Anyone have a resource for 18mm/1.5 helicoils sold individually? I've only come across spark plug repair kits of 24x for $95 minimum. I have a partially stripped out oil fill plug on a split transfer case that I need to repair.

Local automotive machine shop might sell you one out of their kit.

Better yet, they might hot tank the case and install the HC for a reasonable price.

thanks Jim, I originally made the mistake of taking the case home from my local machine shop where the owner told me that he was fresh out of his 18mm spark plug helicoils and that it would be a week or so until they came in.

I thought I would be getting "right on that transfer case rebuild", as it turns out it's been about 6mo.'s since. Hind sight is always 20/20 isn't it.

I would not worry about 'egg on face'.


Get it done correctly and don't look back.

If the case is out of the rig, why not tig and re-tap?

problem with helicoils is the fact that the taps required are generally NOT a normal size up from the 18mm thread, so finding a helicoil itself is easy but if they havent already used the helicoil specific oversize tap, its not going to do much good...

that's it, very good idea

the case has already been tanked, I just hope it's clean enough for a solid tig without pits. The pits won't make for a very clean tap
