Guys, been 10 years or more since I was part of this forum. So long I forgot my username!! Had to start from scratch

Anyway I’m making my wife and myself both a set of 16” wheels, out of the factory 15”s

First, made fixture out of axle shaft to hold wheel within .0015 run out. Next, cut wheel shell off original center. Cut ring out of original wheel sheel to be welded to original center. I’m having chrome removed from the centers so I can weld the ring on and turn it down to fit the 16” wheel shell.
It’s my understanding that the center and the wheel shell have to be chromed separate then indicated true and welded.

Maybe it will be worth the wait.

Oh yeah, going from 6” to 8” wide

There are identical OEM wheels in the 16in variety available from a 70 series available. I think city racer has them on his site (although it's currently down due to covid 19)

They look pretty close to 60 series wheels to me just painted silver. Way less work to keep clean versus chrome.

Damn that looks great. Wish I widened my Aussie 16’s

I'm not sure that little pansy lathe of yours can handle this...:)

That's a beautiful Monarch 61! What year is it?
Neat wheel project, although not sure why you wouldn't just send 70 series wheels to the chrome shop.

You have tools like this in your shop? Obviously you have the skills too. I am beyond jealous.

Hi, Very cool project. Also for those saying 70 series can be chromed, try finding a shop that will triple chrome anything anymore. Most of my sources no longer triple chrome. Mike

This place does, and they do amazing work. A friend had his 1st generation 4 runner bumper done there and it was amazing. I'll be taking my hot rod bumpers there soon.

The 70 series wheels look good, and I would go that route if they were wider.

it’s tough to produce chrome two piece wheels because you have to chrome the center separate from the shell then weld together after chrome.

thanks for the good looking lathe comment, I love that baby, its hardly had any use since 1957 when it was born. Very accurate

Ok guys, I decided to go 17” instead of 16”. After beers and measuring, it looks like 17” bastard factory Wheels are gonna be easier than 16” Bastards.

ever took a brand new wheel and put paint stripper On it only to be followed by a sawzall before you ever even mount it!! I guess it’s still returnable...

now on to cutting and boring the black portion Of the wheel out And indicating the factory 60 center into the new 17” wheel. Got to pick up my 60 center from the chrome shop tomorrow. Got one huge concern, how is the Japanese steel of the factory center gonna weld to the Chinese steel of the wheel shell? LOL

So I gave out some bad info earlier in this thread, chrome shop informed me that the wheels do NOT have to be done in two pieces. You can dunk the whole wheel in the chrome vat. I’ll be chastising my buddy who told me that BS when I see him!
also, all wheel chomeing in the USA must go to Santa Clarita, ca. Must have special equipment for wheels. This project just got more $$
