Capt Obvious here - inflation is everywhere. It has been most obvious in vehicles, new and used. For example - I was told this weekend by a dealer that used boats (in the South, at least) are up 20% over last year across the board. And you used to have to pay people to take a used boat from you. Part of that is because that dealer is getting 4 new boats from a manufacturer for this entire year. There are supply chain ripples everywhere. If you want to buy a boat this year - bring your wallet.

People want 100s because they are awesome. If you want mine, you'd have to give me more than I paid for it.

Undoubtedly they are good vehicles, but not without their own quirks as the mileage racks up. I've owned multiple 2UZ-FE powered vehicles and the 100 has had more unique service and more frequent service intervals.

Brake booster failures

Timing belt service

Wheel bearings and axle flange service being done incorrectly, stripped cvs and worn flanges.

Front 2 pinion diff in earlier models

HVAC integrated with nav

Starter under manifold

Exhaust manifolds cracking

Spark plugs backing out, helicoil installs

Steering racks

Etc.

4 sounds better than 2 but 2 pinion front diffs very rarely fail, on the 80 series or the 100 series. The 4 pinion with A-trac is the more common failure. Of course either one can be abused to failure.

Surely it depends on use cases, but there are a lot of folks who have blown their front 2 pinions.

I'll throw gas boiling at elevation in the ring as well.

This isn't meant to say that the 100 isn't a reliable vehicle but it has its own quirks and issues, like many vehicles that stick around this long. My comments also are in response to what was a suggestion that a 100 is more reliable than previous models of Land Cruisers and that other models are popular because of classic looks and are for mall crawling. Which simply isn't true.

Thats not a long list for a 20+ year old car... And most of what you are saying are maintenance items.. not a engineering chronic issue that can't be addressed.. which is why we love them so much...either that or we love punishment.

At this age and mileage, almost all other SUVs (non-Toyota) would have a much longer list of items to repair/replace.

The other reliable Toyota alternatives e.g. 4runner, Sequoia, GX, lack the character/size/comfort/smoothness.

To put it into perspective. I’m a bmw guy, mostly older 2000s-2015 stuff. The land cruiser has been by far the most needy and unreliable car I have ever owned.
My experience too! I have owned may be 8 different BMWs from 2000 to 2017, way cheaper and easier to maintain than the two 100s I own. Yet, I keep telling myself 100 is very reliable.

Just giving you a hard time!

Since this is a pricing thread, figured this might fit here. Have a 2005 LX470, 298,xxx miles on it, fully built (front and rear bumpers, Ironman 4x4 FCP lift kit, 295s, ARB base rack, etc. What would it be worth in today's market?

How long has it been in NH?

coming up on 3 years. Came from FL, undercoated in 2019 and 2020. No rust, and also just had half of the 100k fluids + timing belt and radiator done

I'd be interested to see the web traffic and user signups in this forum over the past 5 years. You'd assume there would be a spike there as well.
I’m one of those. I luckily stumbled onto a 1 owner 2003 for $6k last February. It’s got 300k+ miles but he took meticulous care of it. The original owner told a mutual acquaintance a couple of weeks ago that he wished he wouldn’t have sold it, after hes seen some of my adventures in it

Welcome! I’m continually impressed by the deals people find. You do find that the original owners of these vehicles “get it” and take care of them. Not always, but you have an example of that.

I guess its all relative.
I have owned Isuzu Troopers for 30 years - still have one and we have an LX470 and a LC.
Comparing the two brands, the Isuzu body is well engineered like the Toyotas, but the Engine burns oil, the Transmission is weak, and Isuzu used really cheap leather for the seats.
Both are definitely 4WD capable but the Isuzu's are only worth at most 1/4 the value of an LC or LX470.
Isuzu's just don't have the legendary reliability of Toyota products, but probably as good as most Land Rovers ;)
