Anybody actually see an alternative spot for the starter?

Could have located it under the PS bank like the old style GM V8s. No thanks...I'll take where Toyota placed it on our 2UZFE engines...at least its protected.

The bigger related issue concerns the overall life expectancy out of virgin new starters versus the reman (only) replacements.

Well, you know, I've got a few "good" 100 series clients that I like to be conversant with.

;)

Also, got a few wrenching side-gigs lined up on a few 100 series rigs. I'd like to be proficient in wrenching on them as well considering we have to fix Spresso's rig on a regular basis on the trail.

:flipoff2:

[just kidding Dan]

Knock on wood it was Ali's 80 that needed a little wrench time on last weeks trip to DV. Speaking of control arms I'll be sending you another e-mail ;)

They did it for some reason. What their rationale was we'll never know.

Probably so they could shoehorn it into the GX470, 4Runner, and Prado.

Wouldn't be a problem if the contacts lasted 200k.

Toyota could've given the US the other gasoline engine instead and folks would've been even less happy. The 1FZ-FE (same as FZJ80)... easy to change the starter, that's for sure. It's a good engine but prefer the 2UZ-FE.

I would hate to have a V6 in the 100. It's great to have a fuel efficient engine, but put a underpowered V6 in a heavy vehicle and that engine quickly becomes in-efficient. Our 06' E55 AMG (500hp) AVG's about 16city/22hwy. Our 06 E350 (270hp) V6 Sport gets the same... the AMG is much more fun :D

They were looking 5+ years down the road?

According to the OP ...

Design of UZJ100, as the '98 Cruiser program is coded, was frozen in mid-1994

So I'd say yes. A V8 truck engine was a major development for Toyota and very important if they wanted a serious part of the North American market for light trucks.

Bumped for you newbe 100 owners to read :)

This information should be a sticky for the 100 series section.

What is the benefit of aluminum shelled rod bearings?

Good point on the protection. A guy I was riding with in a this year damaged a starter and alternator after a water event.

I was thinking they put it there to keep it high and dry, out of water during most river crossings. I don't understand how under engine mounted starters can survive being dunked on a regular basis anyway.....
