Has anyone heard from anyone at EMS at all lately? Does not answer the phone ever...no replies to emails...

Ideally that could be a take off tail pipe or exchange with a straight pipe for added performance. I found that without the added muffler highway driving was intolerable.

Ok I have to ask, although I fear the unfortunate answer that I have in mind, why is the tailpipe option that requires less material the option that costs +$50?

Also, I've been wondering since I bought my LC, why is it uncommon for LC owners to head down to the local exhaust shop and get a nice cat back done locally? This was the normal protocol when I owned Toy minis...

RobRed is correct. It's a different style tailpipe. You'll need to order a new tailpipe section from us if you want to go with the modular style that can be switched back and forth. For quiet operation and a little extra power and slightly better sound than stock we recommend going with the EMSPowered cat-back exhaust and keeping the midpipes and headers OEM. If you want the quietest possible operation with slightly increased power we recommend EMSPowered midpipes with OEM cat-back exhaust. My personal preference is EMSPowered cat-back and OEM midpipes/headers for a daily driven 100-series.

We have these produced in batches of 100+ units at a time to get the best possible price to you guys. 80% of folks go with the rear exit tailpipe so that is how we have the production batch configured, the high clearance turndown requires small amount of work to get it that way, that's what the charge is for.

As far as why people don't go to local muffler shops, I'm sure many do. But you have to keep in mind a local muffler shop will build an exhaust with 1) crush bent pipe which is restrictive 2) use mild steel, aluminized steel or at very best 409stainless which isnt really stainless by our standards, and 3) will cost you 500-1000 depending on the shop, quality of materials and time. The EMSPowered system is a setup 1) built and tested by a company specializing in Land Cruisers, 2) built from 304stainless, 3) mandrel bent tubing, 4) has proven dyno tested power gains, 5) uses high quality fasteners and materials. A system equivelant to the EMSPowered catback built by a local muffler shop would cost around $1500-2000 if a muffler shop were to build you such a system. That is even if you find a place that is capable of building such a system and is capable of properly TIG welding the assembly.

You're going to have a hard time finding an exhaust shop that can do that quality of work. There's some clever guys in some exhaust shops, but they ain't artists for the most part.

I appreciate the replies. I do know some skilled folks around here that can do work for very low wages, but I haven't gone that route on the nicest vehicle I've owned for the reasons you mentioned. Thank you both for backing up my thoughts.

it's all in the dyno tests. there is a high output motor to work with in a hundy that makes it worth getting a properly designed exhaust. not a lot can be done with a minitruck motor to turn it into a highway cruiser so there is no need to worry about smooth corners.

Ah ha! Many thanks for putting it in terms I understand ;) I'm new to this luxury thing where the truck moves without the pedal glued to the floor...:steer:
 
baktash, any interest in creating a quick switch out tailpipe?
 
I'm wondering if the spiral mufflers in the midpipes would reduce the drone and free up the restriction some since it woul dbe two 3" moroso's instead of just one at the tailpipe.

This muffler made a HUGE difference for me, and now after 2k miles I can have conversations with people in the back seat at highway speed. It does restrict the flow, but the drone elimination is worth it. Plus I can always buy another tailpipe and switch them out if I want to.

Based on his findings I also did the same mod and on a non supercharged 100, I agree with his findings. I will try to make some videos and take some pictures of what I did. I am not 100% done as I am making the pipe removable. But yes the done is significantly decreased. I also plan to try and see how the drone responds with the extended tailpipe as robred and others have experimented with. I want to see how it compares. Right now I am able to remove the spiral flow muffler and attach a straight pipe. Once I get a pipe long enough to exit at the stock position,I will report back.
 
I'd like to see some pics of your set up. Did you purchase the 3" SS spiral flow muffler? I'm growing tired of the drone as well.
