I broke 3 bolts and cut 1 bolt that connected the cat pipe to the exhaust. I'm ready to install the exhaust after work. I received two gaskets. I assume they are for between the cat pipe and the exhaust. I don't see how it would work anywhere else.

I figure that if i can help anyone while i'm installing the exhaust, i will... Does anyone want pics of anything in particular while i'm under there later tonight?

So I installed the exhaust tonight and I must say that of all the mods I've ever done, this has to rank up there as one of the easiest.

You can definitely feel the difference in throttle response. There does seem to be more power and I feel this from a stop, from rolling, etc. For me, the sound didn't change too much. I first had the stock exhaust then installed a Magnaflow muffler in place without the resonator can, and now I have the ems exhaust. The sound is almost similar to that of just having my Magnaflow muffler. There is a drone from about 2100-2400 rpms. Above and below this, it is quieter. From the rear of the truck it sounds similar to an American v8. I am happy with my purchase.

Installed.

Installation - not bad at all. Presoaked bolts with WD40 several times, starting a day before removal. Everything came off except one broken bolt.

I used a 'cheater' bar - actually a 12" section of 3/4 pipe as an extension on the socket handle to gain more leverage.

The factory muffler is not welded on - it has a clamp AND - there is a notch on the inner pipe and peg on the muffler exit. Spray with lubricant and bounce it around, and it will eventually twist apart. (I can post a picture if anyone is curious).

I only received the clamps with the cat back. The copper gaskets came with the mid pipe. I guess they assume you will reuse whats there from the stock midpipe interface, Its really more of a plate

The old flanges have a copper (crushed) ring - and the removed pipe extended into the cat flange.

I tightened everything up, and have a slight leak (can't hear it, but can feel the exhaust). I have a call in to EMS.

Overall sound is "healthy" but there is a significant drone at 1600 - 2000 rpm. Even when coasting off throttle the volume increases above conversation level. (I tried taking an iphone video, but it didn't really isolate/demonstrate the interior exhaust noise.)

I have new carpet - and will invest in some dynamat style sound deadener prior to install and post my review.

baktasht, is ANYONE at EMS going to respond to my multiple calls and emails about my DP's causing a 420 and 430 code? I've put my stock DP's back on, and guess what, no more CEL.

Anyone have dynamat or the like in their trucks and have this exhaust? I am just curious how much if any, this would help.
Dynamat always helps to keep sound resonance to a minimum in a vehicle. Although it does add some weight.

If anyone is looking to let go of their stock exhaust after upgrading, please let me know. In need of at least the stock muffler and the DS flex pipe.
We generally dispose of old systems that get pulled off of trucks, but I can check to see if we have any here that are still usable, you can have it for free if we do + shipping. Send me an email with your info and I'll let you know, baktasht@emspowered.com

Gentlemen,

Can you please tell me if I can install this myself on the driveway or should I better take it to an exhaust shop? I have no special tools at all. Thanks
The hardest part is removing the old exhaust, installing the new one takes around 45min-1hr.

I received the gaskets, but they came in separate shipments.
Sometimes if we're out of little things like gaskets we'll ship the exhaust out to you and ship the gaskets separately to try and get you everything as quick as possible. Let me know if you have any questions.

PM headed your way.

Give me a call when you get a chance, or PM me your phone number and I'll ring you. We can go through some troubleshooting steps.

Question for those who've installed the EMS system -- have you seen any MPG gains? I'm sure many are LOSING MPGs because they love the new sound when they floor it, therefor driving style may have slightly changed as well. I know that in my 22re pickup, my free-flowing exhaust gave me at least 1 mpg - so wondering if I could expect the same if I bought the EMS kit?

Got an email from EMS that donut gaskets are on the way -- thanks.

Did EMS change the design of the muffler from Magnaflow to a generic brand? The muffler I received did not have the Magnaflow logo stamped into the sheetmetal.

Has anyone heard both the EMS and the DT cat back exhausts side by side? Which one is quieter? I don't want to have any drone whatsover if possible when driving or towing. I also like to hunt and don't want a big huge rumble of noise coming down the trail spooking all the animals at 5am.

Can you add a resonator to both these catback systems? I'd like to purchase one of these I'm just not looking for the loud American V8 sound. I'm more looking for just a nice throaty sound.

Thanks in advance.

Baktash - are these mufflers no longer Magnaflows? It's not stamped on the muffler.

If you use the genuine Toyota muffler, then there is no drone.

The drone comes from using a "straight-through" performance muffler, whether it's a Magnaflow or some other brand.

Replacement of the midpipes and cats does not result in a drone, and I doubt that headers have much to do with it.

If you use a "performance" muffler, then your LC will be noisy.
If you use the genuine Toyota muffler, then your LC will be quiet.

I doubt the other components of the system have much to do with it.

OEM Exh Manifold, Cats

EMS from the Cat Back.

Was hoping the drone would be at a different (lower) RPM.

Anyone notice that this is no longer a Magnaflow muffler?

DT and EMS both have drones. There is no drone while sitting, or with your foot through the floor. Which makes it hard to drive the truck normally...I'm either going 600mph, or 2mph.

One thing we notice when we tested the ems and DT, as nick said, both drone. In the last test iteration we had a straight (stock exit) pipe made for the DT and it significantly reduced drone. This was a stock LC.

My LC has DT headers and ems mids.... It's loud. I ordered a stock exit pipe from ems on 8/26 (waiting for it) to confirm what we learned on the DT.

This is the last to do for the completion of my exhaust write up.

The turn down tip creates a huge amount of drone. As the exhaust note is reverberating off the ground and up through the floor. One thing to take into consideration when purchasing exhausts.

RobRed,

Good info - the tail pipe we purchased had the optional silencer, which is a perforated baffle just after the axle hump that supposedly reduces noise. All it really does is create a sound that sounds like a jet engine/big air leak.

2000UJZ,

Yep, pretty much idle or WOT is the only way to avoid the drone. This isn't my first exhaust system that I've installed, and wish the drone was at the higher RPMs. Looking to add another 3" center in / out resonator between the axle hump and tail pipe to relieve some of the drone.

This is with the OEM tailpipe exit location.

I'm curious... The drone was still there though in the same rpm range as before correct? Just lower in sound volume?

I'm also looking for a solution to this drone. My wife hates it. I don't terribly mind it, but driving the distance that we drive to wheel, she won't be too happy when we get to wherever the destination is. I put dynamat on the floor behind the second row. It did quiet down the sound a bit, but that's all it was... a bit. My next thought was what if the exhaust exit was at the rear of the truck without the reflection from the pavement... then i read your post. I'm curious to see what you find.
