Hey guys, a friend of mine suggested that we could make some front recovery points for my LX 470 out of some angle iron he has. I intend to bolt them right through the frame, but I'm worried about the strength of the angle iron itself. I know it would be pretty strong for a straight, static load, but I'm not sure about how it would handle the forces involved in a dynamic snatch. I know there's all sorts of physics stuff that comes into play; moment of inertia and a bunch of other stuff I do not understand in the least. What are your thoughts?

Thanks, I wonder why I don't see more people mentioning using it, it seems like a pretty easy solution. I've tried googling, but can't find any stats on the strength of angle iron. There is some info out there, but you need to be an engineer to understand it.

You do mean 1/2" in thickness, not height and width, right?

Even 1/4 or 3/16 is going to be considerably beefier than the frame. Just make sure you're smart about how you mount recovery hooks and/or choose sufficiently large D-rings.

I made these out of 1/2" angle iron for my 100 with an ARB bumper. Very heavy duty.

No recoveries yet but I'm pretty sure they would rip the front of the truck off before they failed.
If you don't have an ARB bumper and are just bolting them directly to the frame they could be much lower in profile (shorter) and therefore apply less leverage to the bolts making the system even stronger!

Ahhh right, that makes sense. I guess I just have to decide if I want to make a low profile set for now, and a new set if I ever save up enough for a bumper, or just fab the higher profile ones straight off the bat.

I made some 1/2" angle for my buddy and I, we used it in recovery a few times with no issue. We just mount it to the frame when the old towing points were in the rear. Works great!

That's great, I'm glad to hear from someone that has tested it out. I just got my snatch strap, so I think I'm going to make these recovery points up this week.
