A Couple FJ60 Pointers Needed (newb content ahead!)

The hesitation in second gear is most likely a sticky EGR valve. A common problem with these vehicles, search and you'll find lots of discussion on this issue. Dieseling after you shut off the engine is likely the fuel cut-off solenoid on the carb. Also a common issue. Search. Welcome...

    COTT non-powered 62 style mirrors

I had the CCOT mirrors on my 60 for maybe a year and a half. Cheap plastic, lots of vibration, they eventually cracked and fell off. The only thing I've ever liked about the J##p Wrangler is the mirrors. I think that with a shim they could be made to fit the curve of the 60 door.

Cruiser theft alert in Tucson, AZ

Slim Jim on a 60? IIRC the 60 doors have a type of guard that prevents the use of a slim jim to jimmy up the lock. Can anyone confirm? If it's sitting for a while in front of the house you can just pull the coil wire so it wont start. Not a solution for everyday use, but it'll work until...

    High Mileage Record

I tore mine down and rebuilt at 212,000. Turned out to be nothing that a valve job and carb rebuild wouldn't have solved. The crank, bearings, and cylinders were in excellent condition, like polished mirrors. The machinist thought I might have had 100,000 miles on it judging from his...

    Deceptively Difficult Repairs

Simply removing the Gawdamn air cleaner assembly on these rigs is a pain in the ass. 1. Disconnect Air intake hose 2. unscrew carb nut 3. Disconnect 3 vacuum lines at carb 4. Disconnect EGR Modulator diapram from clip 5. Disconnect one smog hose to Air Cleaner 6. Disconnect other smog hose from...

Can anybody tell me where this hooks up to?

It may be for the reverse lights. It mates to a wire that comes off the top of the transmission. So your reverse lights come on when you put the transmission in reverse. Not so easy to see, you really have to crawl under there and try to look over the top of your transmission. HTH Matt...

How do these compression and leak down numbers sound?

LCnAz, Did you drive to New Mexico to have Bill work on your rig or is Bill back in Tucson now? I've known him for over ten years, he's a great LC mechanic as you have discovered. Great news your rig is in good condition. Matt

Could be the brake booster. There is a procedure in the FSM for testing the brake booster. HTH Matt

    I've done a search, and still the ??? Re-smog?

Where are you located? I worked out a lot of my smog issues by parking side-by-side with an unmolested rig. Then you have a good reference for how things should look and what you need to fix. HTH Matt

Requesting Suggestions for Major Tune-up Items

I recommend you get the factory service manual (FSM) and all the parts you need from CruiserDan at American Toyota in New Mexico. I've done tons of work on my Cruiser, including a complete engine rebuild, and CDan definately has the best prices on OEM parts. Also, the FSM is well written with...

    brake fluid leak

Also, feel under the master cylinder where it mates to the brake booster. Brake fluid can seap out of the master cylinder and down along the brake booster. I had the same mysteriously disappearing brake fluid and it took me a while to figure out where it was going. If this is the case...

    Gas tank recall help

Search this forum. There is a lot of information on this issue. Basically you just need to go to your local Toyota dealer and give them your VIN. They'll check your VIN against a data base to see whether the gas tank has been replaced. If not, they are legally obligated to replace your tank for...
