Correctly measuring and specifying shocks to suit a certain spring setup

Ok so a sort of newbie thing but something I've never completely understood. How do you determine what size/spec shocks to get? I have Lovells medium rate springs giving me about a 3.5 inch lift. I currently run Icon 1.0 shocks that are rated for up to 3 inch lift. That *should* be compatible...

Vacuum system for brake booster on 80 series

I've been removing some aftermarket antenna stuff (am/fm and uhf cb) from my 80 today and got curious about the vacuum setup that is used with the brake booster (no clutch booster on Oz 80's). I've never seen any sort of warning light show up or any sort of buzzer making a noise, so I'm not...

How to tell when the shocks have flogged out and how to correctly measure lift height for specifying replacements ?

Might have been here (?) that it was mentioned about seeing if the shocks on my 80 (7 yr old Icon 1.0's) are flogged out as part of sorting the front-end clanging/banging when traverseing bumps/holes/etc. in roads. I've never actually contemplated shocks 'going bad' but heck they're mechnical...

Castrol VMX-M appears discontinued .... Suggestions on gear oil for manual boxes and transfer cases?

I'm using VMX-M but it looks like it's no longer made as it's NLA from most auto parts stores here now. I last bought some a year ago for a gearbox and transfer case oil change. Seems VMX-80W is the replacement product? I know it's not the only suitable gear oil out there so what other...

IHZ's - are they all the same?

ie. can any 1hz be swapped for any other 1hz? Are there any design differences on the later 1hz's (such as the ones Toyota still makes for 79's in some markets) compared to really early ones like the 1hz in my 80 from the factory in march 1992?

Tread cracking in 7 yr old A/T tyre that has basically nil wear

Found this tread cracking in a 7 yr old but almost nil wear Hero Dynastorm A/T tyre currently on left rear position of my 80 series. This tyre/wheel is one that was on my box trailer since 2016 until very recently. Is this enough cause to replace the tyre? I have two more of these Hero...

    Would you strap a turbo kit to a 1hz with 700 k km's + on the odo ???

I used to ask myself the same question 7 or so years ago when the vehicle was at 600 k km's and never could really resolve the issue in my head. According to the people at Berrima Diesel, if the motor does not have any blow-by it's ok to turbo it, but I'm a little hesitant due to the high life...

So ye olde 1hz has clocked over 700 k km's - t-belt, etc. time so just confirming part numbers and interchangabilities

Just yesterday driving into work.... 700 k km's in 31 years of life since the vehicle was made by Toyota. The t-belt warning light came on as expected to remind me it needs to be done. Is there a contact on the left most number wheel of the odometer that activates the light? I'm aware of the...

Extra oil temp/pressure monitoring functions for Toyota 1hz/1hdt type motors.

What have people done about this, if anything? The factory oil pressure gauge is ok but it tells you basically nothing other than 'yes there is some oil pressure' or 'no there is not'. My 80's 1hz is now less than 300 km off 700 k km's and is the original motor, never removed, never pulled...

    Serious question time - vintage 1hz close to 700 k km's - keep it going or rebuild/replace?

Serious question time... My 80 is about 350 km off clocking 700 k km's still with original 1hz motor from factory. I know it will need the valve shims done plus the usually 100 k km stuff of replacement t-belt, tensioner, water pump and t-stat to make it viable for the next 100 k km's of life...

Do you have a greasing schedule for tail/propshafts and uni-joints? What about front swivel hubs? wheel bearings ?

I'm not sure what the factory spec is for servicing/greasing those components. The swivel hubs as we know are not a sealed space. Tail/prop shafts can be a pita if grease nipples on them and uni-joints are in an awkward position. I'm not sure about what the spec is for wheel bearing service...

To cover or not to cover your spare wheel(s) if they are mounted on 'exterior' wheel carriers not underneath

Always gets mixed opinions... If you have one or more spare wheels/tyres mounted on exterior/external wheel carriers like this do you cover them or leave them uncovered? As you can mine are uncovered. I got rid of the underside spare wheel mounting setup a few years ago. I know plenty of...

Toyota factory steel wheel shadetree mechanic style 'restoration'

Got another factory 16 x 8 toyota steel wheel that gets a new tyre today. it had a lot of surface rust which has now been cleaned up, primed and repainted using hardware store aerosol 'aluminium' colour rust-prevantative paint that's a damn close match to the factory 'silver' used by Toyota on...

Cheap(er) brand tyres vs really expensive known brands for all-terrain (AT) not mud-terrain

I have been running 285/75r16 Cooper AT3's on my 80 since 2015 and have just begun replacing the wheels and tyres as the cooper's are now hard and worn and have done at least 100 k km's. I now have four factory 16 x 8 steel wheels with 1 brand new iLink brand 285/75r16 tyre and three 7 year old...

Used tyre disposal levy (Australia) - how does it work in your country ?

I got a new AT tyre fitted to a factory landcruiser rim yesterday. Local tyre place - really awesome service. Go there all the time for tyre and related stuff. Got talking about tyre disposal... The company they use that does tyre recycling has recently been bought out by a bigger 'player' in...

Pesky annoying clunk sounds like coming from right front somewhere

80 has done this for quite some time, but now I'm getting annoyed by it.... I have a clunk occuring on the right side when going over bumps and lumps on the road. I went for a bit of off-road a few day ago and any rock or corrugation in the dirt tracks made it occur a lot and I'm not a fan of...

Body mounts - the front most ones

Righto my 80 probably has original body mounts fitted at the factory in 1992. I know from observation that the front left one is pretty roasted, and I think the front right is the same. What do people think based on these pics? Front left: Front right: I know that it's a big job to re-do...

    Factory vs non-factory wheels

I'm starting to transition from non-factory aftermarket wheels to factory 16 x 8 steelies. My 80 doesn't need or want bling. It's not a show car. But I do want dependability. Seems that most people say that factory steel wheels are better. Now I can't say yes or no to that, but at the end of...

Second ship with uncontrollable fire made worse by carrying EV's

The fire cannot safetly be extinguished and the only safe way is going to be to sink the ship or let it drift like a ghost ship until the hull crumples and it sinks itself. There is reportedly around 500 EV's from various makers on board the vessel. First vessel to have this occur was the...

Factory 16 x 8 steel wheels (not split rims) used on 80's etc. - any production variances or all the same ?

Re my punctured rear tyre issue, I'm looking to replace all my wheels with factory 16 x 8's and I was wondering if all the Toyota 16 x 8's for 80's, etc. are the same? I'm not asking about split rims here but solid standard rims. Here is one I've fitted to the back of my 80. This was the spare...
