What was the engine in them?

I believe it was a pretty trouble-prone VW V6. Trannies were also an issue. As were electrics. (My in laws bought one new in the 90a and it was a hot mess)
So probably not as bad an engine as the earlier water cooled boxer engines. I had one of those V6s in a Passat wagon and it was fine.
