How to get a diesel freak and an anti 1FZFE freak in the same place?

easy, just give them hammers and tell them to go at it :D

I don't think we'll get Jon into a FZJ80 after what he saw today :frown:

Big thanks to Dan and Jon for helping me pull the engine out. This was quite fun when you have the proper tools (that I borrowed from them).

Tomorrow the block comes apart and on Monday hopefully it's going into the engine shop for a decking and what ever else is needed.

Very nice. Hopefully, when you get here, we won't have to go that far.:grinpimp:

Glad to hear/see that it went well. Keep the pictures coming. Is there any way you can get pictures of the pitting or why you are having to pull the motor?

Good luck.

Jack

easy, just ...

...feed us afterword. Glad to help. It was fun. I've come to the conclusion that the 1FZFE is not the holy grail of Toyota engines that you 80 boys profess.

Long live the 3FE and 22RE!

Those guys look way too happy. I can't remember that last time I had a grin that big on my face.

Further, what are the details on the longevity of the Toyota diesels? I understand there is at least one that is ... not as good as the others, but I forget the specifics.

Anybody know?

Sweet I still have one of Jon's approval of engine's. The 4Runner is not being sold. Never had it in mind though. I love that truck!

The longevity of Toyota diesels is fantastic. Half a million miles. Only one that isn't so good. Of course it's the 2LT-E, which is what I've got. :frown: That said: 30MPG+ and perfect power and torque can't be beat.

I'm still overjoyed to have it over a gas engine.

Good fun! I *should* be around next weekend if you need a hand.

So what is the status of this project?

I spoke with Robbie this morning and it sounds like he and Ali are hoping for the 2-for-1 deal from the machine shop!

Robbie is planning to pull the engine from Keith's 80 this morning, and then he and Ali will take both blocks (Keith's and Michelle's) to Budlong Motorsports for machining. They are planning to use Ali's trailer to transport the engine blocks. Beyond that, Ali can post up with more details.

What are you doing to that poor 80 series?

P.S. That garage looks strangely familliar...

There is a serious lack of pictures in this thread.

There is a serious lack of NEWS in this thread. Teeth are easier to pull.

Alright, alright, keep your panties on, here come some pics!

The reason for pulling the engine out was due to two things: broken crankshaft sprocket tooth and minor pitting on the block surface. The stripped block and the timing cover are at the machine shop for a decking, probably about .005" and a mild honing. New piston rings (same size) and connecting rod bearings will be installed.

Broken sprocket tooth:

This is not a good picture but here's an example of surface pitting due to water corrosion. Water snuck in under the head gasket and corroded the block surface:

The block has been dropped off at the machine shop. I'm cleaning up the piston ring grooves and other parts and pieces.

I just hope I can put all this back together

Slipper chain guide. Sprocket for crankshaft timing sensor, right behind it is the sprocket that drives the oil pump sprocket to the right, and to its right is where the PS pump sprocket gear goes. So, if you don't tighten that crankshaft nut to 304 ft-lb, these three sprockets don't turn and you have low oil pressure and poor power steering!

I'm disappointed at how much carbon build up already in two years :crybaby:

The coolant leak was from the heater hose shortly after the previous HG project and has been fixed since then.

You can see an example of surface pitting near the firewall on cylinder #6. Look at the area next to the triangular shaped coolant passage.

Cleaning piston ring groove is a royal PITA. Carbon deposits don't like to come out easily.

Getting better, but not quite

Let me know if you have any questions.
