I'm at my absolute wits end- truck still overheating despite best efforts (2 Viewers)

Alright so it's 108* outside right now. Went for a long drive.
*JDM fan off
*Louvers covered
*SC belt on
*New knock sensor

Temps climbed to 211* definitely better. This time, going downhill, the truck only dropped to 197*

This was mostly driving. Only hit one red light. So could have climbed higher for the green light fairies were on my side. So did the knock sensor help. Maybe, likely.

I think the shroud needs to come so that we can collectively have that data point.

Also, at 211* it's within the comfort zone of the truck so if that's as warm as it gets then I could accept that...if I had to.

Why the SC belt back on? Thought you were going to do the knock sensor and see if that at least fixed that part (CEL)? Or did I miss something?

Sucked my ass to drive around without it. I have to remove it anyway to get the shroud out so I will test that as well.

and if you drive the same concourse without the louvers blocked off ?

211* is perfectly within operating specifications and considering your experiment with the thermostat coincides with that temperature I would say you have solved your issue.

Way to go. Let's hope it holds at long idle. I was going to suggest removing the super charger and selling it for the claimed 5k interest. But seeing your disdain for its meager performance without SC that is a no go. I am with you on not being happy with stock performance. I decided I had to do something about it as well. It was either buy a supercharger, slee upgrade, 350 upgrade or buy a new truck. I ended up with a 2008 lc200. No more acceleration issues. Figured if I was going to send money for mall cruising accessories it might as well be on something I would always be happy driving.

Perhaps. I'm not totally convinced yet. I need to let it idle and see if it climbs.

I considered the 200 but then I would be forced to get rid of this truck. Not gonna do that so screw it. I'll deal with it :p

Fingers crossed here that your overheating problem is resolved for now...even though it means I don't get your SC now. :flipoff2:

As my age and means to acquire more expensive vehicles has increased, so has my desire to own older 'classics' like the 80. In the last couple of years, I've let go of much newer vehicles including a Porsche to make the LX450 my primary driver. As funny as it sounds, I'd rather pick up a 60-series before another 100 or a 200. Guess it's because these vehicles were 100% out of my reach when new and I never let go of my youthful obsession for them? :meh:

Unfortunately, thanks to MUD, the LX I paid $8K for will probably cost me more than a new 200 series by the time I'm done....

Son of a f****** bitch!!!!
91* ambient at a long stop light. Truck was 211* before stopping to pick up food. Got back in the truck and it was 215*. Within one block, and sitting at long light I get to this (notice the analog temp needle):

Maybe this is a stupid idea, but when it gets really hot, what if you pull into your driveway and point a big box fan at the radiator. If it cools down, the problem is likely airflow. If not, it's something related to idling.

Remove s/c belt, open up the bypass. That should somewhat emulate a non-s/c engine as far as intake temperatures and engine load at least at your lower speeds and idle.

Given your problems appear to be at low speed/idle/drive around the block (once all heated up) it seems that the cooling system can't dump the excess heat and this is happening with negligible engine load. So, back to radiator/shroud/fan/clutch and spacing combo and proving that there is sufficient volume of airflow through the radiator.

I presume you have verified 3 deg btdc timing?

cheers,
george.

Did you replace the thermostat yet? I can't keep up.

No. Doing shroud next. I'll also do what George suggested about the bypass. If those two fail to give me the result I want then I will do thermostat and coolant dilution.

Your screwed just like me. I replaced my rad with a known good one. Still hitting 219 just driving on freeway. Something is hosed on my truck. No engine codes. Will check timing in morning.

Did you find a light Neighbors are out I will ask in the morning.

Outside of airflow I think you also need to look at the fueling. If you can, hook up a wideband AFR and see if its running lean. With your rebuild did you send out the injectors for flow testing and/or cleaning? Have you checked to see if it pulling timing at all. Fuel sock/fuel pump issues? Don't give up there are plentry of sc'd 80's that don't have these problems.

I was hoping that you had this solved. I didn't want to have to be checking in on this while I'm on vacation this week! Between your thread and TN93LC's thread 80 series tech is turning into quite the soap opera......As the 80's turn.
