Evening all.

Just introducing myself as a newcomer to the forum.
Bought myself a 1994, HDJ81, 80 Series Land Cruiser, with a 1HD-T (@190,000 miles) about a year ago.
I've found sanctuary in this forum (many) times in the last year when working and maintaining the cruiser, so thankyou all for the info and diligence.

I've spent the last year getting the cruiser up to date with maintenance including the Big End Bearings...
Well boys just have a look at the state of those, I don't think they had ever been done and we were very near to absolute disaster. Caught em just in time.

No performance mods on the engine, and no indication there was anything wrong, and noticed no difference in the engine after we got new BEB's in.
But I do now have peace of mind that were not going to send those rods to god.

Cheers

As an extra note, the first year of ownership ive gotten down to:

Complete swivel hub rebuild + Axle Seals (Both sides), That was a learning curve.
Big End Bearing Replacement
Diffs + Transfer Case Oil changes
Engine Service
Coolant Flush and change
Thermostat replacement (engine was running COLD)
Cleaned the hell out of the inside (was dirty as)
Lubed up all the nipple points

Now were in a good state.

And as an extra extra note, as I'm sure you'll enjoy, I used to own a 2007(?) Land Rover Discovery 3 (LR3), but bugger me the thing wanted to spend more time up on jack stands than it did on the tarmac. After an endless stream of breakdowns and expensive repairs and time ill never get back working on a god awful designed machine, I sold it on and bought something that wouldn't throw a fit every time the wind hit it weird.

Congrats on your double escape.

Escape 1 - Sold LandRover
Escape 2 - caught those BEBs just in time!

Interesting failure pattern on those bearing shells. Something unusual going on there!

I would suggest look at having used engine oil analysis done in the future, as you approach 100k km on the new bearings.
Its cheap if you do it say at 80k km, 100k km, 110k km 120k etc etc, and gives some confidence in your engine.

Yeah, I look forward to hearing what the theories are on that bearing.

In spite of my ignorance I'm going to guess that those bearings were cast and that the voids were in those bearings from production. Perhaps those voids were originally filled with another material that either dissolved or got flushed out over time or they were simply empty voids from day 1...

Now, the more experienced and knowledgeable can set me straight :)

There's a theory that the early 1hd-t suffered from harmonic vibrations in the crank that causes cavitation in the oil film.
There was various design changes to the 1hd-t to eliminate this

I have heard that LR have a extra heavy duty front ends
That way the tow truck can hook up to them
😂🤣🤪

Welcome to Mud !

Ha, yeah really was a double escape, yeah i'd be interested to, I was hoping the BEB's might be a one and done, but that failure was too tight-aresehole to ignore for the future, maybe ill run a 100k km oil check and see what deposits we have to make the call

Thats interesting, given this is an eariler pre-improvement engine ill have to keen an eye on this in 100k km.

LR posted a marketing photo showing you can hang multiple Disco3's off one Disco3 chassis, probably so you can tow several at once.
