Love hearing and pretty cool that so many of us "regulars" have kids of similar ages

These are very much rigs for upper-middle income, outdoorsy dads in their 30s and 40s .

If I was childfree and wanted a similar-vintage wheeling rig as my GX470, it would be hard to not pick a 1st gen Tundra Xtra Cab to get that full 6.5' bed and camper shell for seeping in. One of my childless friends has one camping experience is quite a bit more "open" relative to me sleeping in the back of my GX. BUT an extended cab truck is really too small for kids, while a quad cab is too long for wheeling or has too short of a bed for sleeping.

Do you sleep in the back of the GX with your kids? That's my game plan for once (at least my oldest) is ready to join.

I traded a JK-R on my GX. My body is too jacked to have one of those. Also a fluke for me for the same reasons. T4R and Tacos were unavailable. Couldn't even buy one.

We have that huge iKamper that can sleep four. But sadly the grand kids are usually in Mom and Dad'a tent.

A long time ago...I was wearing what @Cold Iron described minus the tennis shoes. I sliced through a bunch of damaged trees after a hurricane and a few of them had a vine climbing around them...poison oak. The chain sprayed me with those juices in a way that I'll never forget.

I have that same T shirt from long ago as well. Come to find out burning it is also an experience you will never forget if you inhale the smoke. Don't ask...

I have an RO unit under the kitchen sink which is now bypassed once we switched over to a shared well with a chemical treatment system.

First time I got beaver fever was in the Olympics back in the late 70's. It made for a very LONG weekend. Used to use chlorine tablets in a canteen, usually. But surely glacier runoff from just a couple of miles away can't be harmful and a couple of sips can't hurt anything, right? Would gladly have paid $235 for a portable RO system back then even adjusted backwards for inflation. I'd call that a very good buy. And smart.

Could we revisit the 255/80 17 pizza cutter conversation from several pages back briefly? It got kind of diluted with talk of 34s, 35s, some wheel offset statements and then reversals of those statements, and I got a little confused.

I have:

-2020 base GX460

-4R OR wheels 17x7.5 (I think these are a +15 offset)

-1.5" front, 1" rear lift

-Front lower bumper cut off, Victory Blitz bumper installed, fender liners in front slightly pushed forward already

-Running boards cut off, no sliders

-3rd row delete so a little extra height from the lack of weight there



I have got to be okay to install 255/80 17 Toyo RT Trails, right? Research and my own measurements say mmmmmmmm probably yes, but I want someone with more smarts than me to give me the thumbs up on this idea. I'm only adding .75" in height to the tire and losing about .25" of width (each side) from my existing 265/70 17 setup.

Still, the pizza cutters will be a whooping 2.5" larger diameter than the OEM 265/60 18 tires. But, that's only 1.25" taller so I really only need to clear that distance.

Based on my evaluations the only place I might be tight, and this seems weird to me, is on the rear wheels at the back where the mudflap is. I pulled the flap off but it covers a gaping maw which needs some sort of cover over it, so I reinstalled it. Still, I should have .75 inch of clearance there after install of the 255s. Seems like front wheel well, UCAs, everything up there should clear with lots of room to spare.

2) I found this video which is more appropriate to the GX and my specific wheels. Kind of a garbage video as far as production value and actual substance but it shows me that those size tires and 4R OR wheels should work.



3) Mentions of other size 33s obviously aren't the same due to width differences. I want someone's actual follow up specifically on 33" 255/80 17 pizza cutters on a GX with OEM or similar wheel offset, say 10 to 25 positive offset. I don't think anyone posting questions about them has actually followed up with their final install status, unless I missed a post or thread in my searching.

4) Found this thread that actually has a resolution from the OP, from 2021, looks like he got a set of 255s on 4R wheels with no lift and no mods needed:

That's not a lot of lift so you may hit plastic in the front and may need a BMC. However, neither of those things are the end of the world. Heat gun and a dremel with a cutoff wheel will make quick work out of plastic. A BMC is a pretty simple operation for any shop who can weld (<30 minutes of work per side).

For my rig, I just installed the bigger tires, found out where the were hitting, and then started cutting appropriately . You just may have to live with the annoyance of the tires rubbing until you get it sorted out.

Middle income in CT is probably upper-middle income here in MO .

With a sleeping platform in the back of a GX, you'll definitely have room for one adult and kid and could also fit 2 adults (if the 2nd adult is your spouse as it's quite cozy). We have a lot of great places to camp within 45 minutes of here, so on a few occasions I've grabbed whichever kid has been behaving the best, taken off on a Saturday evening, set up camp, and came home the next day.

There is not enough room for 2 kids, however. So if you want to take the whole family and not sleep in a conventional tent, you'll need either a RTT or a camper. We have the camper which is compact but fits all 4 of us no problem, and the GX with it's V8 is actually a very good tow vehicle.

I may consider a RTT in the future when my son gets a bit older, but only if he gets interested in more overlanding-type things. When I was a kid in the 90s, I'd go on multi-week trips out west with my dad, with us alternating between tent camping and sleeping in the camper shell of his pickup truck. Those "Overlanding before it was a thing" memories are probably the best of my childhood. I'm not sure how much my son will get into that as he's still pretty young. Right now, I do those kinds of trips with my buddies and I solo-sleep in the GX, which is fine (other than not being able to sit up), given the expense of a RTT.

Screw it, I ordered the Toyos. Install this week. Will update accordingly!

I ran 3 different sizes of 33 on +25 oem wheels.

You made need an alignment to clear body mount. The front and rear liners can be manipulated to clear.

Before going to my 34s, my 275/70R18 33s were no longer rubbing on Nokian Hakkapeliittas. No BMC. Just liners manipulation.

@MeefZah My 285/70/17 Mickey Thompsons would just clear the body mount when I had them on 17x8.5 +10 wheels.
When I switched to 17x8.5 -12 wheels a body mount chop was needed.
This is running ~2.2 inches of front lift with Ironman UCAs and within factory alignment specs. I still get some rub on the fender liner plastic when turned and flexed but not a big deal. I also have the Victory Blitz front bumper and have never had clearance issues in the front of the fender

TL;DR: You should be able to clear pizza cutter 33s with the TRD wheels without anything more than smushing the fender liners.

I briefly had a 2-door, 6-speed JK that was a Sport effectively Rubicon-ified. Had it for a few months then found out we were having a kid. The rest is history.

Sleeping platform seems like a good way to go down the road for my truck. It'll probably be just me and my older daughter sleeping in it, at least for the next few years.

100% agree! Camping a couple years ago with the whole family, the next day after we were there, a young couple and pulled up on some small compact sedan to the campsite next to ours. They pulled out their fire wood, some other things, worked on their tent for a while. They really didn't look like campers or out door people. Late afternoon they got their fire going, and we had ours lit. Then, sometime early evening, just after sundown, they pulled everything down and took off. Their fire was still roaring! I mean, not smoldering, or a small little flame, but like a 2 or 3 foot fire!
Needless to say I was pretty P-I-double dollar signs-E-D off! My daughters boyfriend at the time and I went over there, broke it down, watered it, dumped dirt on it and made sure it was out.

The saddest fire I went to was one where some people had dispersed camped on foot thick duff. We could see where they'd built a fire and it had escaped their fire ring once. And then a second time where there was burned nylon from a tent or sleeping bag. They were long gone by the afternoon when it heated up and spread out to an acre or so. Maybe they learned a lesson from that.

In CA, we're supposed to have a "camp fire permit" for fires. It's a simple 15 to 30 minute online course with a simple test at the end. Pass it and you'll get a permit for camp fires, both dispersed and camp ground fire rings. It's good for a year. I've never had a camp host or ranger ask about having one, but I get it every year, just in case.

Okay, I admit, I didn't bother to watch the videos, so a quick question, how much are the filters and how often do you need to change them?
For overlanding, I have a 5 gal jerry filled with store bought quality water and if necessary another 2 gallon bottle inside for refilling the jerry if necessary, which we've never had to do yet, but better safe than sorry.
When we do our long 9 day camping up at Huntington Lake (7,500 ft ele), up in the Sierras, there's potable water spigots every third campsite, and boy! Is that water good!
Although I do have two small bottle filtration systems that I always keep in my rig for the just in case scenario. Not having enough water is something I don't take lightly.
Not only for hydration, but also for cleaning wounds, sanitation, soaking neck bandana's for cooling, etc.

After a few many "don't hurt Dad's Lexus" talks and me reminding him that door handle replacement is a bit of a pain, he now opens it from the bottom.

I'm glad those reminders work for someone. I just replaced my rear driver handle this weekend. Definitely not fun, especially when you're an idiot like me and fail to check the function BEFORE you close the door. Turns out my lock and open cables fell out of the latch end and I didn't realize it. After a mild heart attack, I got the door open by hitting the unlock button repeatedly and pulling on the interior open handle. At least I got in some extra practice for when they break the next one!

They reminders and talks didn't work for along time until I applied some actual, targeted (but light) discipline that I didn't mention in the post . Hasn't happened since! Which is good as I'm not sure how easy to find a Cypress Green handle would be.

Not Lexus related but about a month ago we deleted YouTube off of both TVs (including for me...no more auto/off-road channels) and took non-school laptops away. Our kids behavior, engagement in family life, and amount of chores they are doing drastically improved within a couple of days. They are people again instead of zombies.

I will say, with the performance brake pads and big tires, atrac works so well that people spotting me though I had a locker.

I have only had one situation where I really felt like I could have used lockers and that was snow wheeling.
