Gents,
I’ve had my 45 since 2008 when I purchased in Alberta, Canada. I had it up there until moving back home to Houston in 2014. As you’re likely aware much more humid in Houston than in Western Canada. I had a few cancer spots on passenger side door, but now it’s slowly/quickly spreading. I’m afraid that if I don’t act now it’s going to get too out of control to handle. I’ve never done body work myself, but not afraid to get my hands dirty and learn something new. From those that have been in my place before, what do you recommend I do now? Here are some photos of the rough spots. Thanks! Dave

Real Sterl and a good welder and you will be fine. It is a lovely truck. With the way prices are going up it is a great truck. Read here and you will see stories on the success. Now yes you will be putting every spare $ in it but she is a beauty.

First of all, buy a couple of spray cans of Black Star rust converter and spray it on rust areas— it will stop the rust. Next, scrape away paint under bubbled areas and do the same. The sprayed areas turn a nice black patina type look and I would not do a thing more ( I love the used, I’m no queen look)— but even you did, you at least would hold the rust in abeyance until you decided what to do. This stuff is not cheap but it works really well!

Take a paint scraper and chip the bubbles out to where the paint is solid.

Rust Convert the metal.

Once the converter sets up rub some boiled linseed oil on the exposed rust.

On the underside soak it with Fluid Film.

Drive it.

The world has plenty of perfectly painted cars. Yours tells a story. Let it.

If I disconnect that wire, would it work correctly? I suppose I could snip it and see how it goes. What does that do for my balance, bass, treble? I have it balanced just right to blast Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. ;)

I have a rebuilt 1975 stock carb on the shelf.

LOL Wngrog, I was thinking of YOU and OregonFJ (before he ruined his patina :)) when I was typing my post. "Report to the Patina thread" ---that is funny

Thanks guys! Some great ideas at least to stop the sickness enough to get a hold of it. Good stuff! Will let you all know once I get started on this!

Would tear your doors apart and treat the rust inside. Would be sure the drains along the bottom are clear and the seals around the window are good preventing water from getting inside the door.

Did anyone mention getting rid of the plywood over the wheel wells? That helps promote rust. Keeping everything clean so it doesn't hold moisture is the best thing you can do to prevent rust. I have a tub from a 82 FJ40 that came from Florida. The rust it has is from areas that sand was allowed to accumulate and not cleaned out. Completely different pattern than I've before. Inside the A pillars on the floor, the area where the covers where the hood was. Few others areas that just keeping clean it would have been a great tub. Prevention is a lot easier than repair.
