have a question to fellow knights";
#1......hood is flat "more or less":grinpimp: sheet metal.
#2......hood sheetmetal is reinforced by an X shaped crossmember underneath.
#3.....X-member is bonded with some kind of:hhmm: "Glue"?
#4.....Glue with time looses its bonding to the sheetmetal part of the hood.
#5......sheetmetal begins to have the
"beercan" popping and rattling.
#6....... what the heck can be done to rebond the crossmember to hood sheetmetal:hhmm: short of welding....which am afraid might cause warping or screwup the nice new paint:frown:

TIA

Lou

Howdy! Anything down at the hardware store like Liquid Nails that would work as a bonding agent for painted steel? I know they hang wood paneling with it really easy. Do not use expanding foam, as it will definitely trap water. Ask me how I know!! John

3m 8115

lord

Or what I would use is a quick setting epoxy

JB weld would probably work well

Mix it and put it in a cake icing despenser

Probably be a good idea to take the hood off and do it upside down.

Lou, Eric, John and Marshall, thanks for the input..........glad no one suggested tack weldingl....finally got the hood nice and straight and painted then **** happened:crybaby: all of a sudden over the last month or so all the damn bonds are loosening:mad:after the fact that I painted it..........was not doing that till I got the rust off and painted:frown: think will look at the 3m 8115 or fusor........welding would suck; moral is..........some rust is good on a pig:grinpimp:

You'll be glad you have that nice big soft green table top in front of your house...well, unless it rains

any autobody supplies place will have LOTS of body panel adhesive, but make sure you find the versions that dont requite their own $100 caulking gun. Some are meant for a normal caulikng gun with a long mixing tip. About $30 for a good tube, and the s*** sticks well. OEM's today use it all over to help with NVH.

Hey 3M makes a double sided foam tape that they use on skyscrapers in Asia. In this application I think it would work better than a weld and also help absorb any extra vibration. I believe this product will help

3M 4952 VHB Double Coated Acrylic Foam Tape

The VHB tapes are made for industrial uses. I don't know where you would buy it locally however it is readily available online. I know they make a VHB tape that is specifically designed for autobody panels but I think it can only be found comercially (3M CV45F)

I will be using epoxy putty- that stuff is like JB weld but less runny...

That tape that Boss was talking about seems like the way to go (3M 4952 VHB Double Coated Acrylic Foam Tape) but kinda expensive even for a small roll. Would be good for other places on the pig but I'm sure that it will still be in excess for any one of us. I'd be interested in slitting the cost with someone or a couple guys, here in TX.

Any idea how the tape products hold up at engine compartment temperatures?

Good question: "Temp tolerance 160 degrees F for days weeks" for the 4592 for cv45f "200 degrees F"

If you have adobe go here and type in your number 3M US: Alphabetical Product Listing - 3M products listed alphabetically by trademark and generic descriptor

I am thinking that it is used a lot with auto body parts not in the engine bay and on modern fiberglass.

Looked on one UK site where they  at vehicles that have been in wrecks.

BUT AT THAT COST...WOULDNT LORDS OR SOMETHING BE WAY MORE PRACTICAL?

:hhmm:was wondering about that also.....says it withstands high temps.........my darn engine compartment gets pretty toasty:eek:.according to 3M tech bulletin march 2001 max temp rated to 110 degrees celsius.....the tape recommended for high temps is 4611 rated for 149 degrees celsius long term heat exposure...3 M VHB bulletin Nov. 2005:hhmm: guess will have to look at the 4611 as hot as the engine bay gets in "Rusty"

Lou

you guys figure it out and I'm in for a few feet. Enough to take care of the hood.

just put in an order for a small strip of the high temp stuff; 3m 4611 VHB will see how it goes and give y'all a followup HTH

Lou

Don't use it all up Lou I'll buy some from you so you don't take the total hit for a huge roll.
