Any updates?

I'm interested in getting on this bandwagon, as well

Update...got the small high temp roll of 3m 4611 VHB in friday but won't be able to get to it till this coming weekend........:frown: work keeps getting in the way of pig stuff:crybaby:; plan on using a thin wire wheel to clean between the cross support and the hood then cleaning with denatured or isopropil alcohol then applying the tape; will have to make some small wedges to hold the support away from the hood itself; :idea:any thoughts on using some kind of rust prevention?; just afraid of it interfering with the adhesion/bonding of the tape with the metal....any thoughts on this?..........TIA:cheers:

Lou, how thick is this stuff?

Eric, it is 3M VHB Tape (45 mil Gray)

45 mil gray pressure sensitive adhesive tape for bonding bare metals and holds reliably for through most paint cycle washes and high temperature baking. UL 746C recognition is listed in UL File MH 17478.

from Data Sheet

using it for bare metals is the recommended application...... just so used to pigs rusting that was wondering if I should do some kind of prevention:hhmm:

I've used the VHB tape to mount glass to galvanized metal, I don't know how it will do with paint though. When it sticks, it really sticks.

When I get around to finishing my hood(s), I'll probably try the Norton brand double sided acrylic foam tape. It is used to mount side moldings, cladding, etc, so it is intended to use on painted surfaces. I already bought a roll to repair my other car.

process

used door stops to wedge support away from hood........drill + brass wire brush after chiseling away old bond material..........after this.drill + brass wire brush as far as I could reach........then rags and plenty of denatured alcohol.....let dry then the 3M primer that comes with the tape.........then sticking the F"^%$#@*()"tape in place that wants to stick to everything:frown:...............:idea:just stick edge of tape to surface and fold it over.........double thickness now:cool:;then 4x4s underneath hood and a lot of weight on top.....50% bond strength at 1 hour 90% at 24 hours..full strength 72 hours.........hell I need her running by monday for work!.a:banana: 1 hour job..........will see how it goes long term ..but looks very promising:steer: HTH

Lou those headers are a lot cleaner looking than mine where did you get them? FYI don't complain about your engine bay you taken a look at mine? I'm thinking about cleaning it up and using some white hurculiner stuff on it. Not sure yet. I've decide to hell with weigh make it heavy.

Zach, have no idea where the headers came from; PO installed.....maybe another member might give advice on their origen; they seem to be heavy duty and don't leak:D

I don't know anything about rattling still. Still waiting on my engine. I have someone to transport it. I plan on getting the engine bay cleaned this weekend if I'm off and get it painted for the motor the middle of Aug. Then I'll push the other motor aside and start saving up for parts and extra case for the rebuild of that motor.

Lou,
How many feet of the tape did you end up using? Looks like I would need about 10' for my '78 hood.

Got that much you want to offload?

Monte, don't think you will need that much; I might have used 3 ft at the most......wedged the support gap open with "door stops" and jammed in the vhb tape folded over to make a double thickness bond........as far as I felt comfortable...was worried about opening the gap too far and cracking the fresh paint.......only bought 2 yards and have promised the remaining yard to a fellow mudder......you can buy small sample strips and it was the route I went; HTH:cheers:
