Guys,

Any thoughts on the long single arm swing out from Luke at 4X4 Labs vs. the normal dual swing out (2 spindle) option?

Was thinking you could save some cash by only having to buy one swing out/ spindle assembly.... I assume you can attach the tire carrier and a ladder to the long single arm swing out as well....

Any suggesitons?
 
Can't you add add the 2nd one later? or at least have it built for it, but not install the 2nd spindle etc?

I guess I would say spend the extra now, I kick myself everytime I cut a corner to save a penny. It all ways ends up costing me more, because I didn't get what I really wanted.

I have one with a long single arm
PRO - only one latch to open/close every time you open the hatch
CON - the long arm is longer than you think, people will park a "polite" distance from you, but there still isn't room to swing the arm open

either way, Luke makes good stuff

if you go with one, hinge on the DS so you will have a shorter and safer walk when parallel parked and loading/unloading
 
I dont think you can add a 2nd one (spindle/ arm) later since I think.... they are meant to connect together in the middle to lock..... someone with the bumper would know for sure....
 
I almost went with the one, but Luke and I talked about it and went with the two. I only have the lic. plate holder on the short, but now I have the option to go with a gan can holder or something else on the shorty.

As it is now, the long side is very long and would not want to deal with it longer.

Go with two and don't look back. My $.02

Yep, tire on right (long), license plate on left (shorty). I did that to attempt to balance DS/PS weight. With driver weight, fuel tank on DS, I put the tire on PS.

Also got the rear 3/4 protection, Luke should have that as a "stock" item now and should create no delay in fabrication.

Oh! also had him put the hi-lift behind the tire, this is a great use of space IMHO vs the next-to tire option.

I hate single long swingouts when camping, especially if you're backed against a wooded area. it's gets to be a PITA to walk around it. Also, it may limit when you can open the swingout, and would put extra strain on the single spindle. I have two on my 4x4Labs bumper, tire on the driver's side and ladder/jerry can/cooler holder on the other:

Hey exiled... who installed/ build yours? I see you are in Austin... Any chance I can check your bumper out?

I agree with SF80. If you look at the pricing, its not much more to add the second swingout. The first swingout is what makes the big price jump so you might as well add another swingout while you are at it for the reasons already mentioned.

I've had my labs bumper on for a few days now and I really like it. I went with the dual swingout with the tire mount on the DS. I'll post some pics on the ROTF thread I am starting.

Quick thought, but to everyone that did the tire on the DS, doesn't that hinder your rear view? How does that look from the rear view if you have a 35" tire back there? I would think that PS tire mounting would be better for rear views... Thoughts?

Both are bad. I would think visibility would be worse on the passenger side since whichever side you have the tire mounted you rely more heavily on that side's side-view mirrors. Since there is already the disadvantage on the passenger side (objects in mirror may...blah blah blah), I think that side would be worse.
 
I agree with SF80 on DS tire swing. Ihave been looking into this bumper for my 97 80 I just bought.Can the reciever handle a 3500-4500 lb. trailer? Stephan at 4X4 LABS could not give me astraight answer. NEWBIE by the way. Great forum.
 
x2 on the trailer towing... I have a 5000 lb catering trailer that I haul about once a month. I would imagine the labs receiver to be as strong or stronger than the stock one (valley brand)...

??
 
Its probably one of the those yes it can but legally they can't say because it hasn't been DOT approved, and to much cost involved for them to do it.

I bought it straight from 4x4Labs assembled and installed it myself. You can definitely check it out, I live/work in Round Rock. PM me!
