so last fall after hunting season my cruiser was scratched to hell and looked like crap, so i went down and got some liquid claybar and polish to try to get some of the scratches out! Worked like a dream, i was so excited i took before and after pics on the camera phone and sent them to the wife at work, it looked beautiful! I washed the car about once ever 3 weeks or so to get the grime off at the local touch free, brush-less car wash!

Fast forward to February. Well here in Wenatchee, wa the snow has pretty much melted from the city, still a skiff in the mountains, but on Saturday i made a special day to detail the interior of the cruiser and wash it up really nice! as i washed i noticed small rust spots in variouse places on the shiny white paint. Paint still looks great, so now here is the deal, do i have to buy a toyota color matched pen and paint each little rust spot, there were at least 10 on the rear right fender alone! or should i try the claybar again and put a coat of hardshell wax on afterward?! the wife is at work with the car and i dont wanna wet sand the whole damn thing.

Any good ideas or related experiences appreciated!

Rust indicates either bare metal or industrial fallout.

Determine what it is and proceed from there. My bet is bare metal. That means a refinish.

Are they pin point sized spots? If so, they are (as CD suggested) industrial fallout, or maybe even brakepad material breakdown.

They should clay-bar right off.

99% are pin-point! My wife has the car again today, and its dark when she comes home but i will try to snap some pictures. maybe 3 or 4 actual spots are about . <--- The size or that period! which makes me suspect rock chips as they are on the pillar and one on the roof an inch past the wind sheild.

Ok so should i have waxed after i claybared last fall to prevent this?

And this time around if the claybar works, should i wax afterward or just polish? Thanks Dan and Doc, for the quick replies!

Always wax after claybar'ing'. The claybar removes most everything from your paint, leaving it 'bare' and exposed. Wax is a cheap, and good looking protectant. Which wax you choose is up to you, I prefer the tried and true carnuba's, but that is up to your own opinion.

I would say that if they are paint chips around the pillar and windshield, the rust is to the metal already. I usually get the dremel out and BARELY scuff the spot then reprime with a touch up brush and apply touchup paint then wait a week or so and heavy wax.

Mine has about six million pinpoint spots after this winter, after I spent about 20 hours restoring the paint last summer.

This summer it gets Durabak'd and there will be one less white 80 on the road and a new dark blue or dark green one :D

*GASP* Copier!!!!! Now I need to think of something else to do... *pout*:flipoff2:

Seems as though the first area to rust is the rear hatch, right at the edge by and around the release handle.
I plan on having the back door and window area repainted this summer.
I take a little wax and hit the little pin hole spots that show rust. Works for a little while.

Im assuming the claybar without the wax was the combo leading to this! I am gonna try to claybar it again this weekend and put at least a couple coats of Wax on. Thanks everyone for your input! Much appreciated!

Anybody wanna do a claybar/ wax party!

Where did you get the claybar? Think I'm gonna try this too.

If you get some FLITZ, the tiny rust specs will just wipe off.... Really they will, and they won't come back (for a long time)
Flitz Metal Polish, Fiberglass & Paint Restorer will clean, polish, and protect any non-porous surface safely. Flitz Metal Polish, Fiberglass & Paint
this stuff is awesome! I use it on the boat, car, wheels, guns..
good luck.
Bret

Ps. you don't need the buffer for your spots, just a soft rag and flitz.. the buffer is great on chrome and large areas of paint.

At least it sounds like a good commercial! :p

I will look into it! I take it you have used it on your cruiser? I have used it at work on dull and dirty diamond plate running boards on our ambulances but not on the paint!

The Flitz works great on paint, we had a white Subaru with white paint and it had the same tiny rust specs that you have, it took no time at all to Flitz them away..
We cleaned our Boat with it to remove oxidization on the Gel Coat, yup it worked great.. I should work for Flitz
I have the BIG can! $45..
he he

Spent the day with the Cruiser. Total time took me 5.5 hourss
So here is was i had, this was one of the 6 larger rust spots! I took BLARSENS Advice and used the flitz after the claybar and a rubbing compound did not work!

Notice i only used the flits on the large rust spot, the two smaller pinpoint rust spots can still be seen in pic two! I tested for color fastness under the fender flair It did not do any damage to the paint!

After this step i claybar'd twice with ICE liquid claybar and a synthetic ICE polish, when i ran out of daylight! SO thursday i will rewash, re polish and then WaX The FLitz took all the rust spots that i presume is from brake dust and salt deposits from the sodium chloride the county uses on streets and highways like its going out of style! Hopefully i can beat this rust crap, I also used a duplicolor 2 in one pen for the exposed rock chips that worked great! There was one chip on the roof which the paint was starting to bubble approximatly 1.5 MM around I used a utility knife and flitz'd the crap out of it then sanded and used the paint stick, let dry sanded lightly, reapplied and made it look like new! Paint was 045 White. Thanks for all your comments, i just wanted to let everyone know it worked and Show what i was up against!

Now time for a

I finally washed my truck this weekend for the first time in 3 months, it's been raining pertty much every other weekend here in SoCal causing me to neglect my 80. But I had those same rusty pin spots and couldn't understand it. Thanks for this thread!!!

I would highly recommend the flitz, I was Leary at first but after doing a test i really liked the outcome! It took me a long time but it paid for itself. Don't forget to get a matching paint pen, there were some rock chips and a red speck of paint :crybaby: from someone parking to close. have fun making your cruiser look pretty!

And thanks to all for your helpful words of wisdom!

I just like the fact that without the rust spot, the camera has nothing to focus on. Nice job!
