Well, I picked up my 1985 FJ-60 with the new engine on Tuesday and drove it 600 miles home. Wow!! Great power. 17.8 mpg on the first tank(4.56 gears - need to regear)..

It is a completely rebuilt 1HD-T with Gramae's turbo, H55F transmission and lots of bells and whistles. Loving it!!

Sweet looking swap! I'll bet its screaming at 60mph with the H55, 4.56's and what look to be 285's. Bet your mileage will improve a lot with 3.73's. Is that what you are planing to go with?

OMG, That right there is my dream truck. If you don't do much hardcore offroading then going back to 3.73 would be ideal, and you got yourself a sweet expo rig for long distance travel. Can i be nosy and ask what was the cost of this setup?

It's not as bad as you may think. 2500 rpm at 62 mph. I am contemplating 4.10 or 3.73. I am leaning toward 3.73.

Mongoose, I can't publish the cost because 1) I have never added it all up. 2) my wife would kill me if she actually saw it in a single figure. Let's just say, it will never pay for itself even with 50% improvement in fuel economy!!

That's not as bad as I thought it would be, I was thinking in the 3k + range. If its not used in the rocks then 3.73's would probably be fine that H55 has such a low 1st it will crawl along fine with the diesel torque.

I think it already has... But who cares, that's an awesome engine..

My calculations suggest that 4.10 gears would give 69 mph at 2500 rpm and 3.73s would provide 75.8 at 2500. 3.73s seem like a good match but I wonder what the first gear start will be like with a 20% increase in ratio - right now 2nd gear is just a little steep (barely). Time to go look up H55F ratios..

So H55F ratios are:

1st....4.843:1
2nd....2.619:1
3rd....1.516:1
4th....1.000:1
5th....0.845:1
Rev....4.843:1

That means that if I switch to 3.73s, my first gear crawl ratio will be 50% lower than my current 2nd gear. That makes me pretty comfortable. This is generally an overland rig. And, that seems like a good match!

Congrats! What a sweet engine/rig.

I dreamt of a 1HD-T in moonshine for forever, but the motor cost is what deterred me. I could buy two, running 4bts for what your motor likely cost. You're not going to find a smoother or quieter diesel to put in your cruiser though!

You've got to post up some videos. Did you have the installer turn up the fuel at all?

The 1HD-T is a great engine, drove it on an older model land cruiser in the sand box and ideally would have been my swap of choice, but its limited availability and costs were prohibitive. You're going to enjoy it a lot, congrats.
Fwiw I'm running 4.1 with my 4bt and I'm thinking of regearing to 3.7 for the highway miles. The 4.1 do well on the rocks though.

Good point, forgot to bring that up. I'm running 3.7 gears in my truck and I love them. Great rpms on the highway, and the available torque makes up for the loss in final drive off road.

Aren't you both running 37's?

Really hard to compare the power bands of the two engines, those 4bt's are stump pullers with a peak TQ at 1700rpm. I believe the 1HD-t has peak TQ art 2300ish if I remember right. I do agree though for the OP set-up 3.73's sound like the way to go.

In my 60 with a Isuzu4BD2tc and H55 with 33" tires and 3.73's it turns 2098 rpm at 65 mph. This is right at the 4BD2's peak torque range and works well.

So 65 mph with 3.73's and H55 in 5th gear combined with different height tires =

31" = 2234
33" = 2098
35" = 1978
37" = 1871

So 65 mph with 4.10's and H55 in 5th gear combined with different height tires =

31" = 2455
33" = 2306
35" = 2175
37" = 2057

Here is a great ratio calculator to use - http://www.grimmjeeper.com/gears.html

Yeah, both if us are running the same exact tires actually. The fact that we've got the super low torque peak allows us to get away with 37s and 3.7 gears.

The OP looked to be running 31-33s,so I still think that 3.7s would be a good ratio to at least try.

That said, I distinctly remember that Kevin Rowland ran 4.1s and then 3.7s in his truck, which has 33" tires, an h55 and a 1HD-T, with the 1HD-T turbo. He found that the fuel economy was the same with both gearsets, but he preferred the 4.1s because the truck was quicker off the line. I believe he's still running 4.1 gears to this day.
