Would this kit be the better way to go rather than try to piece together a H55 for my September 1984 FJ60? I saw from another thread that the H55 can be purchased slightly cheaper from Toyota but sourcing the shifter and the specific length bolts to adapt the early tcase may be more work than its worth. I think for my specific application CCOT is asking about 3000.00.

Thanks,

Burl

I would wait for input from one of the guru's like JimC, Georg, or Kurt as it seems like a good deal if everything is included for that price. However, you may be able to save yourself a couple hundred bucks by using a used tranny and getting everything else new.

Buy new if you can. I have had very good experience with 2 different used H55s BUT I think the difference in price to new makes new the better investment. The other stuff needed (that they list on their site) is really no big deal to piece together.

For comparison I was recently quoted $2108.27 for an H55 from my local Toyota dealer. (we get a good club discount, list was quoted at $2635.24). There would be no tax and no shipping charges on top of that.

And yes, the H55 is the tanny that our 60 should have had to begin with!

I'll ask the obvious, have you looked under your 60 to confirm that the spacer is lacking between the tranny and t-case? If you have the spacer you don't need the extra bolts.

As stated above a new H55F is the way to go and with a good discount you can pick one up for ca. $2200. If you can find a dealership nearby that will give a discount you should be able to save money over the CCOT kit as all the other pieces are available through Toyota.

If for no other reason than you'll save the shipping charges....

I do have the non-spacer transmission transfer case combo. When I graduate this spring I'll most likely move back to Fresno and order it in Fresno along with a transfer case rebuild from Marlin Crawler. Marlin is about a 45 minute drive from my folks house.

I would wait till you got back and ordered it from the dealer or Georg(orangefj45) as he is in stockton. With the ccot kit your paying about $500 too much which would pay for a new clutch kit and tcase rebuild kit.

That sounds good. I might head that way for spring break and order it then. That way it will be waiting for me when I get back down there in May.

Does anyone know if the H55 has the same issue after so many miles/years the seal between the case and transmission fails and ends up filling the transmission with the transfer case oil? My H42 does that and I ended up rigging up a ghetto fabulous tubing system between the fill plugs to thwart this issue. Would it be a good idea to do this ahead of time on the new set up or not worry about it?

Thanks

I'm thinking about doing the soa swap at the same time to eliminate having to modify the drive line length twice. Although I'll probably have to anyways because I'll eventually put a toybox in whenever the come available.

With the H55 combo and the additional spacer required does anyone foresee a problem with retaining the stock axle position as far as knuckle degree goes? Can I run this setup for a while? I'm thinking with the added length of the toybox a cut and turn won't be necessary. I run a pretty big lift and dual cases on my 4 runner and am getting by without a cut and turn. Or would it be a good idea to do the cnt once I've finalized the suspension and drive train? I would hate to do a cnt and then end up having to do another one to accommodate any additional modifications.

Thanks,

Burl

It's not the transmission or transmission type that leads to oil migration between the tranny and t-case, it's the failure of the seal between the two. When you install the t-case on the tranny use an input seal for a FJ62 instead of FJ60. It will fit just fine and in an improved design.

Just for comparison, I sell the H55 new for $2090. That's JUST the trans. And shipping can get pricey. The trans weighs just enough to have to go freight.

So, I would agree to buy new if you can.

I am just now starting to drive my 86FJ60 with an H55/ToyBox/Split case. It drives fine but I THINK I am getting a little vibration at launch from the rear drive shaft. I think I need to shim the springs. It is not so bad that I couldn't leave it but I want to dial it in a little better. This is SUA with brand new 4" lift springs by the way.

If you are going to do the ToyBox in the near future anyway I would do it all at once. To me it is enough work to pull the transfer case etc etc that I wouldn't want to do it twice if I could avoid it.

I'll plan on the 62 seal then.

I'm probably going to keep my current springs that have the short aal's from maf. If anything I may do 63" Chevrolet springs in the rear.

Every time I check marlins site the toybox is unavailable that's why I'm thinking may have to do the drive lines twice because there's no time frame for their availability. All the other parts that I'm looking at though seem to be relatively available.

Man, that $3000 would buy a lot of gas ...

Just sayin'.

I bought mine from this guy and shipping from GA to AL, a distance of ca. 150 miles, would have been ca. $400 IIRC. I decided to drive over and pick it up. Either way it's gonna cost in time or money.

Tranny in the box is around 151 lbs, just a pound or two over the limit so that it has to go freight.

Call Marlin instead of relying on the web site. Speak with Brendan... he has been very helpful to me during the process.

Brendan usually is my salesman when I go into the store/shop in person. I'll talk to him in person about it in the spring.

Thanks

Is there anywhere where you can still purchase a used h55?

Spike Strip: Same argument could be made for diesel swaps, or v8 swaps - if mileage is your primary goal.

I didn't do the H55 for gas mileage. I did it for the lower 1st gear and the lowered mechanical stress on the engine at highway speeds provided by the 5th gear overdrive.

Godwin: My Toyota dealer is 4 miles up the road!
