FJ60 Wheels on a 40

Does anyone have pictures of FJ60 wheels on a FJ40 that have been painted or powder coated grey, charcoal or black? Variations of something like this:

Most fj60 wheels came chrome its difficult to paint or powder coat chrome, the white painted wheels work well for powder coat but you have to sand blast them other option is a little sand paper rattle can(looks good in grey or black)

The plan is to purchase some chrome FJ60 wheels, have them dipped to remove the chrome and then have them powder coated a dark charcoal color similar to the American Racing Mojave Teflon wheels on the Icon.

I am thinking about something along the same lines as the OP. I was thinking, buy the chrome wheels and have them sand blasted, then paint or powder coat them. Would the sand blasting not remove the chrome and make it ready for paint prep?

Kent,

Look for nakman's old (red) FJ40 - you should find some pictures here or on the Rising Sun forum. IIRC - he added gray FJ60 rims to it.

As an alternative, there's a Troopy that was owned by Hltoppr (sp?) on Expedition Portal (and probably here) that has AR teflon coated wheels like in your picture. pskhaat just bought the Troopy, so you could also search for his user name.

I just bought a set of chromies myself and plan on taking them to a sandblaster. I did some searches on the internet about this before I bought them and some said you could sandblast and some said no. I paid $50 for all 4 rims so I figured I would give it a try. I will be interested to see how yours go since I won't be doing it anytime soon. Good luck - Jim

I'm in the same boat as you guys. I bought a set and didn't know if they were chrome or just polished aluminum (was going to look into later as it's a future project 3-5 years). If they were polished aluminum I was thinking of a grey/black hard anodized finish...

Several years ago I took a set of FJ60 chromes and etched them with hydrochloric acid, rinsed them and shot Hammerite white on them, they looked killer and still looked good when I sold the truck......total cost $30 and a couple of hours.

Couldn't find any pics for reference.

I've talked with A1 Metal Stripping in Golden, CO and they quoted me $30 per wheel to dip strip the chrome off. I still need to talk with Colorado Powder Coating Inc. about colors and texture options but the last time I asked about doing a set of wheels I was quoted $25 per wheel to blast and powder coat.

Set of four wheels - $60
Dip strip wheels (turns out A1 doesn't dip to remove the chrome just sandblast) - $120
Powder coat - $100
Total - $280

I'll need to find another wheel for the spare.

How dilute was the HCl?

Thanks jacket. That's the reference I needed.

So, which do people prefer more - off white or grey?

I am an off white fan myself. Anyone know where to get a set cheap? Just keep watching here and ebay? Any other places?

Question - Was the off white color of the later style wheel cygnus white?

I'm leaning toward going with the original white color so I'm hoping somebody knows the answer to this question. Thanks!

These are done in gloss white Hammerite

These are not the chrome ones but the OEM white 81 82 FJ40 wheels

What color is your 40? I went with off-white (as close to cygnus as I could find in a can), but I thought it looked good with my green.

My 40 is Rustic Green and, like yours, should look nice with the off white wheels. Here's how she sits today -

Hoping the wheels will look like this when finished - photos from CCOT Website -
