Who would be interested in a Conferr type roof rack? Thinking about two sizes, one for 40's and one 80/100's? Ehsan is considering making a ship-friendly rack that gets tack welded together stateside, but there needs to be strong interest to offset the NRE costs that go into the design. It would be somewhere in the $300-$400 range plus shipping. It will be something along these lines but with no mounting system...

EDIT: I know this has been discussed here before, but nothing ever came of it.

you know alex i have alot of ideas ...one was to have a bow system to hold a rack for an oem soft top rig...it would be able to be used for any top...but i think tubes the same as oem bows would be cool :)

the rack on top i had an idea of two different designs...one reminisent of an oem stye rack.

see pic...i hope i explaned it correctly...just an idea...i am a few years from actually buying one

i like this idea. i'm thinking for that b-pillar tube, to get it to align exactly with the soft top bows underneath, it may require some alteration of your mounting design to adapt in between the tub and the oem bow tube.

with so many rack choices already available here, seems like the cost to ship from Pakistan wouldn't be worthwhile.

Now if you could get some of Ehsan's tub replacement parts here cheap. :hhmm:

What ever happened to your interest in the soft tops? perhaps bows.

There has been so much talk lately about the two and not much accomplished.

I'm only speaking for myself, but I find it hard to take any of these threads seriously when previous ones are not seen through.

not to deviate from your original thread I personally don't see the demand or need to import a rack unless it's something that's radically different then anything we've ever seen here. then again, once it's unveiled, it's open for reproduction anywhere when copy rights don't need to be addressed.

You want bows? I have a set for you. $800 + shipping.

I have been kicking this idea around for a while. I would like to do a rack that can be used with an OEM soft top or hard top. It would be nice to be able to carry my canoe with a top on instead of just topless.

That's the same thing I've been thinking. I run an Ehsan top in the summer and a hard top in the winter and would love a rack like this.

I was thinking about this lately. First thought was to run some bars up from either the rear bumper, side rear of frame or a bracket in the rear back up light hole on one side possibly the top of the rear tire carrier (73) on the other side. The front would be super easy to make with an exta set of windshield brackets and some tubing. Tubing could be slide-able to raise or lower a couple inches to accomodate hard or soft top on both.
But after seeing the Can-Back system it might make the most sense to do windshield brackets in the front with rear support bars attached to the Ehsan/OEM bows with small cut through soft top sealed back around the bracket with velcro for a soft top version. Would the bows support a light even weight? These support brackets front and rear would simply be to attach a removable Con Fer rack to. In Winter or whenever you want to put hard top on you would just need some simple gutter mounts for the rear...since the front windshield bracket is adjustable sliding tubing.

Does any of this make sense? Would this maybe work? Would there be big problems with the mounts moving too much through the canvas over rough terrain as the body flexes? I would think decent size holes re-sealed with industrial velcro would solve this?

The only thing that stopped me from trying to fab one of these up is that I recently put on my Ehsan top and thought that with my family cage, OEM bows, and adding additional tubing to accomodate the rack would look too messy with the soft top off.....doing small rear brackets attached to the bows would solve this problem and would proably look pretty bad ass top on or off.

Any thoughts or reccommendations?

After looking at Johnny C's drawing again, that looks pretty good for the rear as well for a soft top. Maybe the combo of windshield hinge mounts and his tub attachment idea in the rear. Then you could run a full length rack and again would only need simple gutter mounts for the rear when the hard top is on.

maybe even instead of a windshild mount....you have the 2 mounting points on either side and you put a bar on either side of the rear doors going to the rack....then you could still drive windshild down and have your rack on :)

to make it sterdier....have a bar go from side front bar to rear side bar....sooooo....it will be like a slider also :hhmm:

I recently saw this rack/soft top combo from Rugged Ridge for a Jeep. It used a similar method that @JohnnyC sketched out (way back in 2008) where the rack is mounted to the hard top mounting holes. I can see this method used on a 40 if you strategically place the two support pieces where the window zippers are on a factory or STC/Kayline soft top are.
